Use “Unusual” Tactics to Boost Your Online Work

Hand holding a bomb

by MarsDorian

As a creative digital entrepreneur, (jeez, I have to find a better term ) I always look for exciting new ways to inspire me. I’m constantly producing, and I need constant input to keep up with it. The questions that I ask myself on a daily basis:

Where can I get new ideas from, and how can I improve the work I do online ?

Reading other sites that linger in the same market is almost never a good choice – the idea pool goes stale and produces lame-ass abominations.

No, sometimes you have to look at “unconventional” places to take your online presence to the NEXT level. Here’s what I do:

1) Get feedback from a person who doesn’t know shit about the online world. One of my best friends is a psychologist in training, and guess how MUCH he knows about blogging ?  Zero. NADA. ZILCH. He thinks that WordPress is an American newspaper, and that the blogosphere is an astral term for a spot in the galaxy.

And even though he’s a digital douchebag, I have gained some of the mind-blowing advice from him about branding & blogging. He told me that I should use LESS colors for my online brand (that’s why only use 3-4), he told me I need to be more inspirational (hence the title: “The world needs you”) and a lot of other stuff that has taken my site to the NEXT level.

Not everyone who visits your online presence is digital geek that knows the ins and outs – that’s why YOU HAVE TO ASK a completely NEWBIE about what he or she thinks about your online presence.

And who knows ? You may get feedback that changes your digital destiny. It happened to me.

2) Do something in the real world, I repeat, the REAL world (filled with fleshy creatures called HUMANS !) that has NOTHING to do with your online stuff. Winter time for me is always working time – I glue my eyes on the computer and create like crazy. That’s not a healthy lifestyle, and especially if you overdo it.

That’s why I do a variety of things in the real world:

Visit a unique gallery.Participate in a dinner that mixes “normal” people with homeless and ignites conversation and mutual feel-goodness. Become the DJ of a music quiz. Learn Spanish with a Chilean. Go to church ( no shit – I did that for about 4 times. Pure interest.)

Anything that widens your horizon + and has NOTHING to do with the digital world WORKS WONDERS. Believe me, you will get so refreshed and inspired that you’ll DRAMATICALLY improve your online work.

My fireball friend Ashley Ambirge is a good example – she’s creating an insanely successful digital biz while living an adventurous lifestyle in South America. If you read her awesome online guide “You don’t need a job, YOU need guts” you will see how her exciting lifestyle upgrades her digital work !

3) Get inspiration from completely different niches. If you want to get inspired digitally, I CHALLENGE you NOT to drown in similar markets. The personal development blogger who only reads other self-help blogs is SERIOUSLY missing out. It’s called incest, and results in un-creative miscarriages. If you want to build a remarkable online presence, then get input from DIFFERENT sources.

You know my major inspirations ? Japanese pop-artist Takashi Murakami, video games and comics – the whole nerd package. How much has this to do with digital entrepreneurship and blogging ? NOthing. But those sources makes sure that I create fresh stuff and stand out while others drown in obscurity.

What “strange” sources can you “steal” from ?

4) Break up your digital inertia. Listen, we human have muscles and limbs for a reason. Sitting 8+ hours on our fat asses isn’t what nature had in mind when she created us. We were supposed to run around naked, fetch plants and kill sabre tooth tigers. Nowadays, the only thing we move are our fingers and what we kill is our brain cells. Break that unhealthy lifestyle and get your body back in motion:

I personally make a short break every 40 – 50 minutes, doing some exercises and dancing to my favorite music. I also go outside and jog, do long walks and even ride the bike.

Plz, don’t turn into a degenerate that’s sticking to the screen 24/7.

Work your body – MOVE MOVE MOVE. Dance, jog and walk. MOVE MOVE MOVE.

When you get back to your screen, you’ll feel rejuvenated and ready to rock the digital world.

5) Become more productive by increasing the pressure. I always mention that you must set yourself a deadline in order to be more productive, but let’s face it, even that might not be enough. It’s still operating in pussy mode, and that’s why I turned up the volume:

Create a public contest with like-minded, AMBITIOUS crusaders and put a up a price that ridicules the losers. We called it “The Create and Conquer Challenge” and that’s at stake:

The potential loss of 1000$ and public humiliation through a week long video announcing how much the winner KICKs-ass. Nobody wants to do THAT, and that’s why we don’t just light our asses on fire, we BURN them in order to win the challenge !

COME ON everyone. Let’s get the energy flowing – what things do YOU do that have nothing to do with your ONLINE work but sure AS HELL improve it ??

And retweet this to share the inspirations with your friends !

    How about digipreneur?
In my mind this post puts you in the lead for the challenge Mars. There are so many good points to follow it’s kind of like following down a rabbit hole – in a good way!

What do I do that has nothing to do with my online work? I read – a lot, but not just blogs! Murder mysteries, history, National Geographic – I love learning about life! I also listen to music while I’m walking. Just yesterday I got 3 blog post ideas from song lyrics! And I cook. Cooking for me is sometimes like meditation. It grounds me in reality in the best possible way. And then? We get to eat :)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Sandi,

Digipreneur — mmm, will think about that :)
Music is the muse – some of my best work is created under the influence of music.
And cooking ? That’s special – I have heard before that cooking is like meditation, too bad that I SUCK at it.
But hey, thank heavens there’re alternatives !

You’re a digital creapreneur. Or a creative digipreneur. Well, something like that …

Another brilliant and inspiring post. Inspiration usually comes when you are doing completely different things .. ;-)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Interesting name suggestions – but it’s still too long, gotta find a more concise version.
And true, inspiration comes from the most unusual places.
The goddess of creativity works in mysterious ways :)

This may be my favorite post yet that you’ve written Mars, simply because it’s the exact one that I needed to read today. And yes, “creative digital entrepreneur” is lame. I use that one myself and can’t stand it :)

    Retweeting this goodness right now…

    Creative digital entrepreneur = InterNinja

Because ninjas are always creative, seem to be from another world (digital), and kick ass.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Ninja I get, but inter ?

      As in “inbetween” ?

      • http://www.jonathanvaudreuil.com/ Jonathan Vaudreuil

        As in, Internet.

My mind churns out many great ideas, but once they leave my personal grey matter playground? No guarantee they make sense!

I personally follow close to 150 blogs, and make sure that no more than 10 of them are in the same topics to avoid duplicate content and keep me well rounded. There are so many sources of possible inspiration out there that it would be impossible to list them.

You beat me to the punch with this, but I call these sources of inspiration outside of the norm a mind bomb. It destroys a lot of your previous judgments and opinions, and inspires you to change and grow. Apart from reading something out of your norm, my favourite suggestion is to try some different food. We all have our favourites and comfort good, but there is so much more out there to enjoy.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey James,

I’m a food luver as well – especially Thai food. But sadly, it has NEVER inspired me to produce better work. That could change of course.

Does black mail work for you?

Cause if it does I am so gonna find something to blackmail you to make a video of you dancing when you make a break :) I wanna see that!

I could not agree with you more. I get more ideas when I take a “day off my blog” than in 10 days blogging non stop. Also, the tip about getting a newbie look at your blog is mind blowing. Gotta try that.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Brankica,

thanx for the praise – we’ll see about the video. No secret cameras in my room that could give you the pleasure :)

    Hi Mars,

I’m a first time visitor and I really like this post. I have some of my friends who aren’t very socially active check out my blogs and they are fascinated by all the things that I post about and what I know online. It scares the living you know what out of them too. But they also are able to give me some real feedback on my topics and if they can understand what I’m sharing. My blogs are mainly geared toward the newbies so their input has been very helpful to me.

I have also been visiting numerous blogs over the past month and a lot of them are off topic but I so enjoy reading something different. I still am learning so much each day and it really gives me that break I need.

Really good post and I’ll be sure to come back again.

” We were supposed to run around naked, fetch plants and kill sabre tooth tigers”

hahaha I make similar points to my mates about this and they think I’m a crack pot. Our bodies haven’t evolved that much for it to not be true, it’s just the boom of technology has become rapid. This seduces us to stay glued to the screen.

I do exercise but I AM guilty of staying at the screen for too long though. Think I’ll take a leaf out of your book and bust out some “moon walks” every half hour :P

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Anthony, GET OUT THERE,
seriously, I’m guilty as hell – some days I’M GLUED to my screen and forget to drink & move, but it’S not healthy.
You think you get a lof stuff done, but actually, you don’t.
real movement in the world + fresh air + real world interactions is SOO essential when you want to work effectively online !

i like this post , especially point number 3 , thank you for taking your time to write it :)

This is obvious advice – yet I’m amazed how few people do this kind of stuff. I have two blogs – one dedicated to my comics and another dedicated to miscellaneous pen-and-ink art. To dig up ideas for them, I actually go out into the world for inspiration. I’ll take a walk, hike through an unfamiliar neighborhood, swing by the library, stop by the bookstore or newstand, etc. One of the cardinal rules of creating is to research outside your genre or niche, but it’s shocking that many people don’t do that.

Climbing mountains. :-) I love it just because it’s so different from blogging — physically. While blogging is solitary work, being in a camping trip opens me up to people and nature. I don’t think it’s something the other “entertainment bloggers” do a lot of, so it’s an edge. And yes, the writing does improve a lot when I get back.

First time I stumbled across your work, but won’t be the last.I play legos or draw with my 6 year old son and am amazed at the creativity and originality of children. As the CMO of a digital agency it was my responsibility for crafting a campaign to attract the mom audience for a non-exciting product. I was talking about my day with my son and he said if you want moms to like your stuff get their kids a free coloring book. We came up with a downloadable activity book for the client and it was a hit with the moms. Not sure what my son’s hourly rate is, but can’t beat that for inspiration. Keep up the great work

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

THat’s a kick-ass example, Robert. Children often come up with crazy-good ideas, because there mind is still full of fantasy and unbashed inspiration.
Creativity comes from unusual places :)
