A Call to Action

I’m going to speak my mind, so this won’t take very long.

There are thousands of ways to impact the world positively:

  • Be friendly to neighbour ( Hey Claus, let me help with that bag )
  • Write a thank you note ( did I tell how much you rock ? No ? Well, let me tell you how much you rock !)
  • Make people feel good on a party ( introduce the outsider to the circle )
  • Invite someone to dinner ( today, it’s all on me !)
  • be an exceptional good lover ( Babe, heaven will be a dump after I have finished making love to you !)

All of them are awesome ways to epic-fy your surroundings, but nothing, NOTHING is as impactful as

creating your own business.

And not just any business – a small business that’s connected to the digital world in one way or another.

Some people say you have to build a gigantic corporation a la Facebook to change the world, but I say that’s bullshit. Look at Corbett Barr, his rocking two blogs , and look how many lives he’s changing around the world. Epicness doesn’t come from the size of your work, but from the intensity you put into it. A very small biz with endless fire inside can have more impact that a faceless corporation. And that’s awesome. Fucking awesome !

With the right message you can reach thousands of people – impacting the world in ways our ancestors have never dreamt of.

By just following the simple principle of offering kick-ass value the most unique way possible, your actions will have more impact than a 44 Magnum aimed at a pumpkin.
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom !

Many people are afraid of just taking the beast by the horns and going for the ride – so was I.

I was scared.

In fact, I was scared shitless.
My little voice kept punishing me with downward talk – you are going to fail, you can’t do it, no way you will pull this one of…

Nasty words with no real backup. Bullets made of hot air trying to pierce through your body, but instead “just” causing itches. Bang bang in your mind. And in your mind only.

Here’s what I experienced:

Once you decide you are in for the action, you just jump into it. With arms wide open.

You know what happens you run into a situation where you don’t know the outcome ?

Your brain will find a way to make it work. It’s not a cheap ass quote I copied from some self-help blog, it’s evidence now. I had crazy thoughts about failing (and even starving to death!) and now I just laugh at them. If you live in the western part of the world, the chances of becoming homeless (because you’re creating your own career) are slim to none. I know one or two lazy and stupid people, and even those douchebags manage to survive. Sometimes I wonder how they do it, but the good news is: If a brain fried retard doing nothing all day can manage to survive, then a hungry and passionate soul like you will manage that too :)

Easily.

I used to work for other people, and it sucked. Sometimes, I had really cool ideas and methods, but I couldn’t act on them because they weren’t “appropriate”. Working for someone else ALWAYS means limiting your potential – you have to adapt to your environment instead of adapting the environment to yourself. You may have wicked ideas, a cool concept or “just” a cool way of helping people , but if your true style doesn’t fit your job surrounding you are toasted. You’re like a kick-ass angel wanting to ascend like a rocket, but having his wings chained to the ground.

I thought having sex is the best feeling in the world, but that’s not the case anymore.

When I coach people, or help a small biz in the offline world, I almost get an orgasm just because I can bring my whole, raw and uncensored personality into the game. No more asking for permission – it’s YOU, the person you help, and endless magic in between.

My presence is expanding, my knowledge is deepening, and I’m helping more and more people every new week. I can see that their life changes through my actions, and witnessing that is the most E-P-I-C feeling ever !

Happiness and positive change doesn’t come from sitting on your ass in some remote place and meditating about yin and yang, it comes from doing ACTION that’s 100% aligned with your style.

Like building a small online biz that’s impacting your world :)

If you still have a 9 to 5 job, seriously think about starting your own little online biz. Find your why, and start hustling. 1 – 2 hours a day is enough for doing some serious damage.

Go. Make it happen. NOW !

And share this important message with the people you care about !

      Hey King,

      of course I know her – who doesn't ?
When I re-read this post, I actually thought of her.
The style feels so similar in this post, maybe I'm her lost son :)

        Yessir!

That's the reason I mentioned her. She gave me style too. I am her youngest

        boyfriend :P

    Amen Mars, amen.

I'm just now accepting the fact that I'm meant to run my own business and not work for somebody else. It's taken awhile for me to reconfigure the way I see myself but now that I've accepted it I feel like I can attack it with full force.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Sam,

I can relate. It took me ages to finally make the leap, and I was still hesitating.
But once you do it, and I'm glad you did, you are going in with full attack mode. I hesitated long enough, still wondering if I should do it or not, but once I ignored that little voice, and I went in – with endless fire inside.
It's the best decision I have ever made in my life !

Mars, you seriously are my favorite blog the net. I envy you're writing ability.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      haha thanx Bud,

doing my best to craft my inner voice. Just do the same !

  • Derek Jensen

I love your drive and devotion Mars! Working on college students and the general public to think the same.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Derek,

thanks ! That energy is what makes me wake up in the morning.
Does this mean you are working on spreading the fire ?
      I hope so !

      • Derek Jensen

Same here! So many campfires will get started in 2011!

Man, this couldn't have come at a better time Mars.

Look, I love my job because I have a lot of freedom but at the same time I get so many great ideas passed over only to come full circle months (even years) later – but because someone else brought them up. Well…fuck that.

I'm tired of working for other people because I KNOW these ideas rock – barely anyone is doing them and that's what makes them so perfect; it's right at the tipping point.

I've got some great ideas in the works (on my own and with fellow bloggers) – I'm starting now but I think 2011 is going to be the BIG year for it all to finally fall into place.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Murray,

I know there's lots of epicness within – I can feel it :)
Looking at your blog right now and seeing the online actions you take via Twitter, I know you are going to rock this in 2011 !!
You can do it, and you WILL do it. It's just a matter of time…

    • http://bizhax.com Keith Bloemendaal

Let's do it Murray! I have the same feeling about 2011, lot's going on in my brain right now…

  • Peter J

Light a fire on someones ass that gets them to do something amazing, i agree is an awesome feeling. It's also brilliant when you do something that inspires heaps of people to do something.

Facebook may be big, but i certainly know that Mark isn't doing any serious shit to change people's lives around forever; just get more people addicted to the net and staying connected :|

I don't plan to be working the 9 to 5 for too long as i do want to work my way into business. And also making the decision to go to university in 2012 isn't one of the thing's i will happily go into. Something that will keep my parents happy thinking that I'm doing something like getting a “job”, I've got other motives though, fuck them, working for someone else is not a life long goal of mine.

    Awesome post Mars!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      haha,

always luv the passionate style you bring to the table, Peter !
It's awesome that you plan to follow your own path, I'm sure your parents will understand.

Never comprise on your destiny – the world doesn't need another obedient drone slaving away at a corporation !

GO MAKE IT HAPPEN NOW. Indeed!!!!!

I really regret sitting on the side lines for most of 2010. I would have been so much further along if I just took the plunge and took action. Sitting around waiting for things to be right never works, TAKING ACTION??? Now that works!! And Im ready to take mega action in 2011.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      now THAT's the spirit, Ryan.
NO more side lines for you.
It's going to be an epic 2011 or nothing :)

      I'm with you !

Make it happen. That's the advice that most people never follow.

If they did, there would be a lot more happy and content people in the world.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      True.
Then let's lead by example, Jenny :)

  • Jonathan Vaudreuil

You know, your blog has been my favorite newly added blog the past few weeks.

You're some brilliant mix between a guy with answers and a solid motivational mentor.

Let's face it: this advice has existed longer than we would guess. Yet the way you write it strikes a chord with me. I need more of people like you and less of the stuff I don't love.

    Thank you.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

wow – best compliment of the day so far, Jonathan.
It's awesome that my writing helps you – this is part of my mission !
Nothing's new under the sun, but we have to keep repeating the important stuff and flavor it with inspiraton to spark the fire of every potential entrepreneur !

    Great post Mars.

There's nothing quite like having your own business and being in control of your future and being able to help people in a tangible way. In my financial planning job I love helping people make smart decisions with their money, and in the blogging world I love helping people learn more about putting some business strategy behind their blogging efforts.

I think the key is to find what you're passionate about, and then decide to pursue your passions, regardless of what other people think.

    Well done,

    Allan

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Allan,

awesome that you are using your knowledge to help people. That is always the best way to do business.
NO matter how cliche – breathing your passion is how you rock best, no matter what the nay-sayers around you scream.

I really hope someone not believing in him/herself will stumble in this blog post and realize his/her own potential.
The only obstacle in anything you choose to embark in life is you.
If you don't believe in yourself, you're as good as dead, so there's only one thing left to do: start freaking believing.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      yess sir !
Or just start doing what you have to do and build your belief along the journey. Feasible action and getting results can be great fire for your thinking !

  • Dan Lew

Awesome post Mars! I respect you for speaking your mind, getting outside your comfort zone and taking action is really key, keep up the great work!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      thanx Dan,

only getting better from here :)

  • Andrzej

As they say: FEAR is False Evidence Appearing Real ands it can be a real pain in the All Sudden Scream. Having an impact, even that small daily impact of helping somebody else can make us feel good, and helping change someone's life is AWSOME!
Sometimes it even prevents from falling asleep (damn! ;)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      nothing to add, Andrzej :)

  • ryangoesabroad

Mars, this rocks… Doesn't it seem like there's such a connection between entrepreneurship and raw personality injection?? One compliments the other and they both beg to be unleashed.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Nope, it's all one, Ryan :)

  • Jen Fromal

This is a great post for a certain type of person that has the gusto to blindly follow their dreams. There are people that can embark on an around the world trip and leave everything behind.. I admire them. I think when you are just starting out it's hard to decide if you want to just give it your all and start with a clean slate, or ease into a big change. Sometimes dreaming big and starting small can be the “better” or “more responsible” way to go if you can't just drop everything. Nonetheless, this post was really great and definitely appeals to the go-getter side that everyone has, no matter how dominating or stifled that side is.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Jen,

thinking big and acting small actually go together. The thing is – you can't act big in the beginning, no matter how big your dreams. You have to start small, pushing your comfort zone bit by bit and expanding your mind. If you do that every week, you mind will shift, and what seemed big to you in the beginning becomes feasible now !
That's why I CHALLENGE you think BIIIG but start with tiny steps, every day !

      Let's do this, Jen :)
