Why The World Needs YOU

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes.

If you have visited my blog before, you will notice that the slick MD logo is gone.

Heck yeah – it’s gone for good, at least banner-wise.

Why ?

Because I’m going to turn up the volume.

The old motto “MD – Spread your influence” sounded cool, and certainly looked cool, but it didn’t inspire…not even myself.

Every day I woke up, and mumbled the line “Spread your influence”, my brain fired back with a sharp “Why ?”

Yeah – why ?

That tiny little word pierced through my passionate body and left me with an imagined hole.

Why spread your influence ?

This is not a clear direction, and spreading influence for the sake of spreading your influence is more useless than eating at McDonalds.

And if you read my blog, you know that I’m all about a clear direction – finding your “why” – your mission.

After endless hours of thinking, Mr. Epiphany finally came to me and punched some much-needed clarity into my mind:

My goal is to inspire people. And to be more precise – I want to get people fired up to leave their own dent in the (digital) universe, preferably through entrepreneurship. Get excited and DO stuff.

Let’s start with this:

IMPACT YOUR WORLD

Like a blazing meteor – but instead of slamming a crater into earth, you are going to impact people’s minds. Booooooom. Just like that.

Here’s the revelation:

Life becomes awesome when you don’t make it about yourself.

And those are words are coming out from the mouth of a big egoist (hint: it’s me!)

What the hell does this mean ?

It simply means that you shift your focus from “you” to the “world”.

So, instead of asking yourself:

  • …how to get better at writing, ask yourself how to write stuff that blows people away
  • …will I ever enough money, ask yourself how you can create something that fans will love to pay for
  • …if you make a difference, ask yourself how you can increase your impact on the life of people

Can you see the pattern ? It’s all about making the world around you awesome. Not only does this feel incredibly good (and vaporizes your self-absorbed problems), it also gives you enough motivation to keep going – because you can always increase your influence.

When you use your strengths – the stuff that you excel at – and you spread your influence, you will make an impact.

Now this isn’t some “mumbo-jumbo kumbaya my lord” crap I copied from a third class self-help book. This is real experience from my own life:

I

  • Met an avid marsdorian.com fan at a movie premiere (!), telling me how much I inspired him to go out and do things. This fella is now going to go fully berserk with his freelancing career, thanx to the fire he caught from me.
  • Inspired an independent moviemaker to shoot her first short-movie.
  • Got a “thank you” mail from a South African who’s now starting his own, blog-based business because of my blog. He wrote that my writing and videos kicked some much needed inspiration into his ass.
  • helped a client  to create his own digital career
  • Talked to an artist who’s now going to re-brand himself and try new, scary arty things that he wanted to do way earlier in his career. He said that my energy infected him and made him finally DO things that matter.

This platform is just 8 months old, but I’m already seeing the impact in the “real” world. Imagine what will happen within a year or two ?

E-P-I-C-N-E-S-S my friend. Pure epicness.

And you know what ?

You can do the same.

Don’t waste time on asking yourself stupid questions like:

  • Why am I not (yet) successful ?
  • Am I too old/young for this ?
  • Can I really make a difference ?

You know what they have in common ? They are all useless. Repeat after me – USELESS.

Fact is, you make a difference, always. No matter how small it may be now – you can – and you WILL scale.

If you want motivation on fire, go tell yourself:

The world needs you!

Tell it yourself every day, every morning and every time you feel like a pointless piece of existence.

And then follow up with the question:

How can I use my strengths to impact the world ?

If you don’t know the answers yet, and you need more fire and inspiration, keep reading this blog :)

In fact…

Consider this blog the dynamite between your ass cheeks – whenever you feel like sitting down and playing it timidly safe, it will blow up and throw you right back on the action lane.

I plan to do epic shit in life and business, and then share my experience on this blog. I have seen the impact I already caused and I want to take it to a higher level. A much higher level. Check my new mission page to know what I mean.

Why not join me ? – let’s shine together.

  • Help your neighbor.
  • send someone a positive message
  • Inspire your peers to be awesome.
  • Write stuff that blows people away.
  • Become an entrepreneur.
  • Create a blog.
  • Better: build a blog-based business

Why ?

Because the world needs you.

I really like this Mars. To be honest, I had thought that with your previous tagline.. why? it was catchy, but the new improved version really focuses and is about making that unique contribution. Great stuff Mars!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Jen,

yeah, THAT was the dilemma. It was catchy and cool sounding, but what was the point of it ?

Spreading your influence for the sake of spreading your influence is pointless…and it's not motivating in the least.

Since I'm all about inspiration, I had to change it – and the new direction wakes me up EXCITED in the morning. I have found my red line again.

It's awesome that you share the style, Jen !

  • http://www.elevatedsimplicity.com EL

I'm stoked over the new look tag line and direction Mars!

    It definitely defines you better.

Based on our convo I'm still formulating my new tag line and header look. I hope to have something soon while all the data you shared with me is fresh in the mellon.

    Keep rockin' it Mars!

    Eric

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Eric,

thanx man – it's a much needed change. The previous image was cool – but it was just that. And marsdorian.com is more about being cool – it's about kicking-ass on a major scale.
Grrreat times are up ahead – the fire is burning again :)

Keep me updated on your header look – you def need something that fits YOUR style as well.

      I know you'll find a way, Eric :)

  • http://trafficcoleman.com/ TrafficColeman

Mars you always give those inspiring words for people to chew on..keep that motivation going bro…people need that..

    “TrafficColeman “Signing Off”

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Antonio,

yeah – that's why I am here – to put the fire under everyone's ass ;)

  • http://twitter.com/santiago_rial Santiago Rial

Inspiring indeed, Mars. It's all so complicated and simple at the same time, that most of the times it's just what we ourselves make from it. As the proverbial possibility of something happening just because someone believes in it.

We're all here for a reason! So for whatever it's worth, know there's someone in Buenos Aires, Argentina, spreading the message and sharing the shine :D

    Cheers!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Haha, Santiago,

thanx for sharing the shine :)
I'm currently heavily into learning Spanish. But I have never been to Argentina…yet !

I believe that things are simple at the core – we just luv to make them complicated on the surface.

With this blog, I'm going to go back to the roots and let “the world needs you” style flavor every (digital) action I take.

Exciting times are up ahead !

      • http://twitter.com/santiago_rial Santiago Rial

If you ever come to B.A. we'll definitely need to have a talk over a beer! :D

        Cheers amigo.

  • robinlynnbrooks

Love “Changes” ! Now you got me thinking about a little Bowie, sweet.

It occurred to me some time ago how so many people do indeed have an “I” problem. Also, you remind me of the many things which we might loose to find freedom in ourselves and go out actively seeking that epic-shift within.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Cool to see you here, Robin,

yeah – got the intro from good old Bowie.

The shift is within. And in the next step, you HAVE to bring it outside and let the world witness it.

Here's for maximum, inspirational impact ;)

  • ryangoesabroad

Good word, Mars. I liked your previous headline as well, but the world needs people who have come alive and who are really going for the world change. We need entrepreneurs like no other time, and people like you to inspire them… Go for it man!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Ryan,

yeah – the previous image was cool but it didn't convey the message, which is more important to me !
I'm feeling much more fired up with my new direction, because it has purpose and an inspirational impact.
The edginess is going to stay, but flavored with more inspiration !

The world is in desperate need for new entrepreneurs – true leaders who shine bright.
Let's become them – together, Ryan, ahh, I feel soo fired up now ;)

  • http://cashwithatrueconscience.com/rbblog Ryan Biddulph

    Hi Mars,

Finding the “Why” portion of your mission creates a powerful force that can't be stopped.

“Why” people influence the masses because their purpose is beyond worldly things. Identifying this emotion causes you to think about how you can better the whole. As you note, you become less absorbed with how YOU can be served and more obsessed with how you can serve others….or really, serve the entire earth.

This type of big picture thinking creates fearlessness and a sick drive that can't be stopped.

Luv the new mission statement! Go get 'em :)

    Ryan

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Ryan,

“As you note, you become less absorbed with how YOU can be served and more obsessed with how you can serve others….or really, serve the entire earth.”

you always put it so elegantly and I always have to use strong words. That how it sums it up beautifully – becoming less self-absorbed and making it more about the cause

  • http://blog.esimplestudios.com Gabriele Maidecchi

It takes guts to completely revolutionize your mission like you just did, but I wouldn't expect anything less from you.
The biggest lesson I get from this is never to be afraid of “adjusting” your aim in order to pursue your true mission. That's what old-school entrepreneurs really need to learn.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Gabriele,

I believe my main mission didn't change – the blog style before was also about firing people up and giving them in inspiration. But the style and tagline just didn't convey it – it was all about being cool.
What I'm doing now is much more aligned with my true style – and it feels awesome – truly awe-some. The next months are going to be epic :)

  • http://twitter.com/jesseoguns Jesse Oguns

this most def is kicking my ass right now. To speak in ted.com. That is inspiring. I am writing in from Lagos West Africa. I have something to prove and I want my community to have a share in the exponential growth in digital revolution. Thx Mars.

That's awesome Jesse – you are doing your share of pure epicness. Nice !
Yeah – I believe TED needs me – very soon.
      Gotta have lofty dreams :)

  • Trever Clark

Dynamite between your ass cheeks. Nice. :-)

Yeah, the old logo was cool, and I definitely found it applicable (since I have some idea of what my mission is and why I want to spread my influence) – but the new one takes it to another level.

I think it'll apply to a broader audience (without being so broad that it's watered down) and help people to to “rock it” with their lives in general, as opposed to concentrating solely on spreading influence.

Congrats on the new direction – I'll be looking forward to seeing what you do with it!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey thanx Trever,

the only reason why I changed it was because of a motivation issue.
Spreading your influence wasn't exciting me in the least – I had serious passion issues at times. Why spread your influence ? What's the deeper sense behind that ? Making an inspirational impact !
Spreading your influence is only a part of that scheme, and that's why I included it in the tagline.
I feel so inspired to do awesome things now.
Thanx for joining the journey, Trever :)

  • http://twitter.com/catebolt Cate Bolt

*smile* I just found you through a tweet that was retweeted by a friend of a friend who retweeted it… or something.

Any which way, I'm glad I did because it totally blows my mind to find other people who are not asking the self-limiting questions. I get fired up when people are not all about themselves. And because I know from going from homeless & destitute to saving the lives of dozens of third-world children in the space of less than a year that the world does need me. And you. And everyone else who has the balls to say “I can” and just get on with it.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Hey Cate, awesome to see you here.
Truth is, I always was about myself, but life is so much more fun once you think about the world rather than about yourself.
Imagining the impact you can make in your lifetime – gosh – it's blowing my mind.
My new blog tagline will become my new motto in love – the magic that wakes me up in the morning. We ALL can amazing things.

  • http://www.whereisjenny.com Jenny

    Awesome. Love your writing style!

Having a brand/image/tagline that you're completely happy with and inspires those around you is way more important than people think. Your passion really begins to shine when everything aligns.

    Keep going dude!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Thanx Jenny,

yeah – the previous line “spread your influence” wasn't exciting me – and if you are not excited about your work you should leave it or change something, which I did.

It's just awesome how energetic life becomes once you exactly know your cause – 100% !

  • how2mingle

Hey Mars, this is once again, – another awesome post.

I thoroughly enjoy your posts, they are inspirational and you're writing is definitely my kind of language!

    Thanks for writing :-)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      haha, thanx a bunch.
Just getting starting with cranking up the awesome.
I want this blog to be massively impactful – like a blazing meteor !

      • how2mingle

Bro, seriously. I'm a fan of your writing and I am very excited for what's to come. You're one of the first ones who I've read, who I actually like forwarding to my people and readers.

        keep it up!

      thanx man,

awesome that you are fired up ! With this blog I will lead by example, and share the things and stories that I witness on this epic journey.

I’m totally with you here, but I think it’s tricky to make it about the “world” and not about “you.” Why can’t it be simultaneous? I believe you can absolutely live fully for yourself, while empowering the rest of the world through your work!

Otherwise, I loved what you have to say. Realizing you’ve been leaving the bigger picture out can be scary, but liberating! A very recent, very similar revelation just led me to post the first article on my blog that I’ve kept in the back of my mind while writing everything else for the last three months, without ever just coming right out and saying it. And you know what? It’s damn important to come out and say it! So good for you :D

    And my favorite part:
“Spreading influence for the sake of spreading your influence is more useless than eating at McDonalds.”

Tessa, if you read my “mission” page and other articles,
you will find out that I'm very self-absorbed and not the kumbay-yo person who sings about world piece.
If you don't love yourself to death , you can't make a kick-ass impact that's valuable.
And here's the interesting thing – the more you concentrate on giving value and making the world awesome, the better YOU feel.
I think it's pure genius that being a self-loving person and rocking your surroundings can go together.

    Mike,

The world needs you is true. Get involved. You will find out that you are needed and appreciated when you do so, humbly and without compensation expectations. However, that will come, because people love to give, and it should be accepted, gratefully.

Don’t forget. You, are the message.

I'm loving it – bring it! Good attitude, you're one of the few people i know who want to do serious epic shit in business. ;)

I'll miss the awesome logo you had before, still i get what you mean by “why the hell are we doing this?”

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Peter,

yeah – the logo is awesome, and I still use it for my personal brand and company, but the new one is conveying the message that I want to spread !
Don't worry – the ass-kickingness is still going to stay…or better – it's going to evolve.
I want to do epic shit – and I need to :)

  • Nikolas Allen

“Life becomes awesome when you don’t make it about yourself.”

So true! I also stumbled upon that realization earlier this year and it's leading me in an epic new direction as well.

As for the statement, “Consider this blog to be the dynamite between your ass cheeks…” well, that gave me the biggest LOL moment of my day!

Nice evolution, Mars. Keep up the digital domination!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Thanx Nikolas,

I'm not yet dominating the digital net, but I'm planning to. I believe that you should aim for big and valuable goals if you want to heavily impact this world. I know you are leaving your mark with your artistic brand consulting, and that's sweet-ass !

Love it, Mars! I'm new here, but this totally resonates. This very afternoon I was having a deep discussion with my coach about bringing my best self to serve the world. Love this grass-roots effort to change the world, starting with me. Bookmarking!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Sarah,

that's awesome. I checked your site – consulting is a grreat way to positively impact your world. You improving the life of people – it doesn't get much more valuable than that. I believe you are on a sweet mission and career – I hope you achieve maximum impact, Sarah ;)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Jessica,

that is awesome ! Tackling scary projects of any kind is a pure push on your comfort zone, but it's so necessary !

yes, you definitely are inspiring and isn't it great?? by helping the 'world' you're actually helping yourself! so it's completely win-win. I love inspiring people. And how I do it is to just BE MYSELF. By my lifestyle and my happiness, I do affect other people.. Even through facebook!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Janet,

so true – the feeling that accompanies helping others is very fulfilling. I also love inspiring people – that and getting inspired by mavericks like Chris Guillebeau, Vaynerchuk and Seth Godin.
We have to share the fire !

  • Murlu

Maaaaaaaars, you've got that fire, man!

“Consider this blog the dynamite between your ass cheeks” I couldn't stop laughing at that – now that's some solid wording.

I like the thought process – makes a lot more sense – it's not just about trying to spread YOUR influence, it was really always about spreading the influence to help OTHERS.

I expect a lot from you now Mars – don't let us down >:| – the question becomes – will you keep up with the energy? Make this shit work, make that impact.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Murray,

yeah – it's rather the impact you can make then spreading your influence. I didn't feel good with it – I had to change it !

Haha, I know I have a big mouth. But the more I promise, the more I have to deliver. It's a motivating kick in the ass, and I WILL deliver.

      Wait and see :)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

that's an admirable goal. I'm doing exercises every morning, but martial arts is the next level. What a great mission in life.

Definitely my kind of stuff …just what I have been preaching on my blog to entrepreneurs worldwide. The time to start making a difference is now and technology has given a remarkable too to do just that. I like you audacity Mars, very bold indeed and certainly needed at a time like this.

    Keep the fire aglow!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

thanx Tito – it is bold, and I now I have to prove if I'm worthy. I figured everyone can speak big words, but doing the action is another game. I am going to do the stuff I say and then blog about it.

Technology has given us the power to build an one man digital empire and the possibility to reach the whole planet. Let's use that gift, and illuminate the whole place
(lol, I'm a sucker for big phrases :

  • http://alidavies.com/ Ali Davies

    Hey Mars,
This is a mistake I see a lot of people in my industry making (coaching & mentoring). Many coaches bang on and on about coaching, when in fact most folk don't give a damn about coaching. They give a damn about their pain and how you can solve it.

The more we focus on serving others, helping them with their challenges and genuinely caring about making a difference for them the more successful we will be.

“Me-itis” is one of the biggest killers for entrepreneurs.

Love how passionately you talk about making a difference – there is no better cause.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Ali,

yeah – talking about the method is NEVER inspiring – it's all about painting the future and the gain with visual words. That's why I went from “Spread Your Influence” to “THe World needs YOu” – it's SOO much more inspirational and motivating. I'm still an egoist, but shifting the focus from me to the world is a better way to use your precious talents.
