Let’s face it – working all day online and sitting on your fat ass isn’t the healthiest way to live. You end up looking like a vampire while feeling like a zombie…crucified and shot 3xtimes in the back.

Don’t let this happen to you ! I have found some dirt-simple ways that improve the quality of my online work while keeping the health high at the same time.

Some of it is heavily inspired by The Now Habit, which is the BEST book on being productive and kicking procrastination in it’s juicy ass !

Ready for some sweet-a-licious working days ? Here we go:

  • Do some simple exercise before and between your work

It doesn’t have to be insane Schwarzenegger workouts – simple stuff does white magic too !

Before I work online, I do exercises. And that means stretching, dancing and jogging. This shoots my bloodstream to a higher level and makes my whole body work like a well-oiled machine. After a couple hours of work, I repeat some of the exercise. Work for hours + workout for minutes in-between. High quality of work guaranteed !

  • Don’t schedule your work, schedule your play time

Even though I luv my online work, it’s necessary to meet real humans once in a while and let some daylight shine on your bleached skin.

Most people schedule their work, but I do the opposite: I schedule the after-work activities (I use Google calendar): visiting friends, going out, reading and similar activities. Why ? Because if you are half the procrastinator that I am, you will get scared shitless when you see the amount of work you have to face. Planning your leisure activities is more enjoyable and will show the REAL amount of time you can actually spent on working. If you subtract family/friend time, going out and reading, you will see that you don’t have 24 hours for working but WAY less. And that gives you enough pressure to achieve more !

  • Divide your day in POWs

I made this term up. A POW is a Period Of Work, and it equals 30 mins of uninterrupted QUALITY work. This principle is so fun it feels like a game. So when I start working, I set my time to 30 mins and work fully focused during that period. No email checking, no surfing the web and no sex in between. Just me and my work. When the 30 mins are over, I take a small break and then tackle the next POW. At the end of the day I count my POWs (usually 5-8) and slowly increase the numbers over a monthly basis.

And yeah – if I interrupt one of these POWs, then I don’t count it. I set my timer and start again. I only count full quality 30 min periods !

Use the website stopwatch to time yourself and start POWing !

BONUS:

  • How to get lots of energy…for free

Electricity ? No !Radioactivity ? Hell no !

Water my friend. Pure, fresh water. Do you know that the number 1 symptom of dehydration isn’t thirst, but fatigue ? When you feel tired way too often, you may drink not enough water.

Seriously – forget about eating too much and popping your vitamin pills. If you drink at least 2-3 liters of water a day ( about 10 cups ), you will experience a pure energy rush that keeps you going like a Duracell rabbit.

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA Summary:

Before you work online, do some exercise. Why ? Good for your health + improves your online work

Plan your leisure time. Why ? Because it shows you how much time you really have for work.

Divide your work in POWS Why ? Beats and procrastination and makes you highly productive.

BONUS:

Drink lots of water (10 cups) ! Why ? Gives you endless energy.

What now ? Tweet and Facebook-share this post and tell me your ways of skyrocketing your online productivity AND boosting your health !

I don’t know about you, but I sit in front of computer for a long time while working. There are 2 things I learned to increase my productivity.
1.) Eat just enough lunch. Eating too much lunch will make me feel sleepy and unproductive.
2.) Get some fresh air. I always go out from my office building from time to time to get some fresh air. It will oxygenate your brain (read this article http://goo.gl/dWV7)

    Happy POW-ing!!!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Steven,

My whole work takes place in front of the computer. Getting fresh air is super-vital – it's a sin that I don't do it as much as I should. Re-freshing your brain is a grrreat way to revitalize your brain power.
Thanx for the article, I will read it ;)

    kickin’ ass Mars

(why ya gotta call my a slob bro)

Believe it or not, I balance my nutrition by going to music festivals and clubs a few times a month – nothing will trim you down than 3 days with nothing to eat but beer (yes, booze is food). Also works as a great little digital sabbatical.

In all though, yeah, should start doing a bit more activities to get the blog pumping – but that’s why I listen to dark psytrance and hardstyle :P

I try to set my POW’s into 2 hour periods which is actually a little long sometimes but it’s amazing how if I dedicate 2 pure hours to writing I’ll get 2x the amount of work done I’d do in 4 – 5 hours.

    Keep it up man

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Murray,

booze for food ? Wha-at ? Lol, that would never work for me. Movement and water is the stuff that keeps me going.
I've heard from others as well that sticking to 1-2 hours of concentrated work does wonders. But I'm way to impatient and energetic to endure that.
And digital sabbatical ? Respect ! This won't be possible for me, at least in THIS lifetime :)

Great ideas! I also stretch my shoulders on the door grame whenever I enter my office. Just put my hands on either side of the door frame and lean in. I tend to hunch at the computer and this helps me from getting too hunchbacked…Also the exercise ball to sit on! Helps with posture and core strength.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Daria,

Stretching can do wonders – especially for your back. I personally prefer dancing and jogging, as it rocks the whole body !

exercise ball ? Sounds sweet. I have never seen one of those in real life ;)

  • http://www.devacoaching.com devacoach

Oh yeah, love these reminders. I also use something called StretchClock on my desktop. I set the timer for my POW and go for it until the app reminds me to get up and stretch.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Now that's the spirit !

Really do it – your quality of work will skyrocket !

  • http://keithbloemendaal.com Keith Bloemendaal

Great read Mars, especially the water part. I try to drink plenty myself, at least until time for a bourbon ;-)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Keith,

water is my new magic now – free and healthy, and super-effective. Make it your religion to drink it like crazy ;)

  • http://23ca.wordpress.com Clay Forsberg

I like your Periods Of Work (POW) suggestion. I kind of used to do that but got away from it. Now I'm back on it. A toast to you … with a glass of water.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      haha,

      nice finisher, Clay !
But I have to warn you: using the Pow system is super-addictive ! You always want to beat your high score !

A better way to balance your energy levels is by eating a better diet. Throw out all the grains, rice, bread and processed food, and focus on vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, and nuts. You won't experience any afternoon crashes, and you will lose weight in time, too. I've lost 30 pounds this year mainly from a change in diet. Check out marksdailyapple.com for more info.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey man,

      thanx for the tips.
I already eat lots nuts, but I haven't managed to get rid of the other food yet ! While weight loss is not a goal of mine, getting more energy certainly is. I will check out your link !

      Happy productivity

“Don’t schedule your work, schedule your play time” Brilliant! Enough said on that. ;-)

Also, I live for online stopwatch. I work on my writing in 10 minutes spurts and use this tools to time myself.

    Great post Mars … Ciao!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      10 mins Michele ?

I only manage those units if I drink a lot of Red Bull.
But timing does help intensely !

      here's to the celebration of POW-ing ;)

I use the pomodoro timer when I'm editing my films – then reward myself with a 5 minute dance break every 25 mins (usually 70's or 80's tunes – very loud!) Keeps me hyperactive & enthusiastic throughout the day/night :)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Kim,

that's freaking awesome ! I used Pomodoro technique in the beginning as well, but I thought that the overall schedule was too rigid and that's why I prefer the more freestyle approach I have now.
70s and 80s ? Nice. Music is really the fuel that keeps the energy going.

        70's & 80's – I'm a disco girl :)

Wow, i never knew you were that serious about the water thing. Makes sense why i cant think anymore, xD more water…

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

More more more water my friend. Believe me, it does WONDERS !

Totally going to use the POW idea. I have a very difficult time focusing on one thing. This does make it sort of like a game. And dancing/exercising in between is a great idea to keep the energy up. The more energy I have, the better my writing is. Never thought of that before. Thanks, Mars!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Awesome Erin,

I hope you apply it. It's a wicked and proven method authorized by the Institute of Mars Dorian Applied Sciences ;)

  • http://blog.esimplestudios.com Gabriele Maidecchi

I infected some of the people at work to come with my to gym 3 times a week in the evening, so that's how I get my energies back, and it works wonders.
About the 30 minutes POW, I am sure you'll like this link: http://bit.ly/bqQOcP
That video made me go “WEWT” more than once.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Gabriele,

truth to be told, I have never seen a gym from the inside since high school ;(
I guess I have to stick to my own exercise and running like a monkey on fire through the streets !
Thanx for the link, going to check it out. I will tell you what I think !

      • http://blog.esimplestudios.com Gabriele Maidecchi

Truth be told, I hate running, and the gym is 2 minutes from my office, a crime not to go haha

  • http://reflectivelife.com/ Jay

    Hi Mars,

Love your methods. I'm a big fan of exercise breaks when working–that's one reason I prefer to work at home when possible. The exercise makes me more alert, focused, and positive, which translates into better work.

Another name for POWs is time-boxing. It is a great method for increasing focus and beating procrastination. I think it is an especially valuable tool for doing creative work such as writing, which is much better done with no distractions.

    Thanks for the post!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Jay,
damn – time-boxing sounds almost better than PoW. Might swap the term ;)
It's just so fun to use methods that increase your productivity and quality !

  • http://www.thelifething.com Jonny Gibaud

POWs, sounds very familiar to my Productivity Pie of 4 slices of 25 mins spaced by 4 slices of 5 minutes.

Between 20 and 50 minutes is actually the optimal time frame for learning, study and focussed attention so both work incredibly well.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Sounds similar, Jonny !

So 20 – 50 mins are perfect ? Nice. Heard that before but couldn't remember it. Thanx for reminding me. Now I need to go out and learn !

  • http://www.mostlymaths.net/ Ruben Berenguel

Drinking more water can indeed boost your brain activity. I always start the day with 2 glasses. It works wonders!

Your POW's are also the same as pomodoros in The Pomodoro Technique, which is a specific way of using timeboxing to manage your time. I used it for a while, and then went for a specific type of timeboxing I liked better. I love this method, as it allows me to work at full capacity for a day, leaving me rested.

    Cheers,
    Ruben
The post I talked about: Timeboxing: You Will Work Like Never Before

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Ruben,

yeah – I'm a huge fan of the pomodoro technique, I have even written an early post about it. I adjusted it a bit to fill my own needs – aiming for 30 mins and then having bigger breaks / more freedom in between. I have read the “Now Habit” and it truly changed my productivity life :)

  • http://solomonpinkins.com Solomon

Yet another great post Mars. Thanks so much for all the quality that you put out. I cracked up with that no sex during POW that should be a no brainer but the the things we have to remind ourselves of are hilarious sometimes. Keep shining bro!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

haha, the sex reminder is essential, especially if you think like me :)
POWing is a powerful and simple methods that makes my day.
