The Unconventional Guide to Expanding Your Digital Network

Social networking image

by MarsDorian

A kick-ass network is the source energy of your business life – it’s the magic fuel that helps you progress with your digital crusade.

I love connecting with people – especially with people that rock hard and have inspirational, ambitious goals.

Having a kick-ass network is also a big part of my blog expansion – both in traffic and monetization.

And since I’m in mad love with minimalism,  I ask myself:

“How can I expand my network awesomely in less time ?”

Focusing on the essence is, like always, the white magic that rocks the house.

Ready for some fun and glorious networking expansion ?

First, get in the mindset of a crusader who’s conquering digital territory to expand his empire.

Now – go:

  • Level 1 – Embrace the Magic of 150

Your brain is hard wired to pay attention to about 150 people. Try to have a relationship with any more than that, and your life will turn to pure crap.

Maybe.

Putting a limit on your online “core” relationships is healthy. It shifts your focus back to what’s essential, and it prevents you from wasting time with time-sucking vampires.

Make it your goal to move towards a network of 150 awesome people – your core.

  • Level 2 – Choose your Favorite Hub

That’s Twitter for me, it could be Facebook or even something different for you. Focus is essential, so only choose ONE platform.

Next, create a list ( on Twitter / Facebook ) and name it “150” or use a similar title that includes the number. This category is your core relationship base – people who are on a similar mission and WANT to connect and dominate with you.

  • Level 3 – Choose Your Fellow Digital Crusaders

You have the concept of 150, you have the platform – what else do you need ?

Right – the people !

Hunting time ! Imagine your are in a jungle – the internet jungle – and you are looking for powerful allies that can be part of your conquest. Have a high standard – not everyone is allowed to become a part of your tribe.

Not everybody deserves the same attention – this is what I look for:

- Look for connectors. Those are people who already have an online presence (a blog) and at least a minor influence. They build they communities, and they actively engage in the social media realm.

- Think about social proof. How many Twitter followers do they have ? How many comments on their platform ? Do influential people connect with them ? These can be important clues. I don’t say you should only care about the stats, but they can indicate if the person is dominating or at least going to.

- Check their inner fire. Some peeps have a community of 6 people and they are fine with it. Other people carry fire in their eyes – you know they will grow and expand. Those are the allies you want to connect with – ambitious souls who want to build a legacy. Choose people that are moving towards a goal.

  • Level 4 – Where to Look

Where to find all of your potential allies ? They are scattered around the net – each of them on a quest to find their digital grail.

Don’t worry – finding the territories of your fellow crusaders is not only fun but also cheesy-easy.

That’s how I find them:

- reading blogs and sites that I like. If I like the owner, I will also check if they have featured link posts. You know, articles that include other people’s blogs the blog owner likes. Diggy’s 36 Best Blogs You Should Know About or the  50 Netsetters You Should Know About are prime examples. Those people are popular in one way or another, and they usually do grrreat work. What a grreat way to find new allies !

- checking the networks of my allies. If I like them, chances are I will also like their friends. Checking my allies’ networks is an awesome way to find new crusaders.

- Listening to interviews on awesome channels like Blogcast FM or TheRiseToTheTop is another killer way to find potential like-minded souls.

These are just 3 methods that yield fruitful results. I’m sure you will find at least 100 more :)

  • Level 5 – Quality Recruiting

Like I said, I’m a sucker for minimalism. Spending all day chit-chatting and writing comments is ineffective and tiresome.  Only working in a mine 300 feet below the earth is more gruesome.

Aim for a limited QUALITY period – let’s say one hour a day. Actively check blog posts and your social media channels. Who’s the lucky one who can become part of your glorious network ? It’s a fun hunt.

Spend the entire hour on looking and then “tracking down” a maximum of 1 – 3 peeps.

Don’t say – ahh, I can do way better. I’ll network with at least 20+  new peeps today.

Believe me, this won’t work in the long run. The goal is to gradually expand your social network. From experience I know that expanding in tiny amounts everyday is dimensions better that one massive attack every once in while.

How to connect:

- simply approach them on your social media channels and ignite the conversation:

“Really like the writing style on your blog”

“Enjoyed your last guest post on…”

” I admire your passion and your mission to save the world”

Whatever you like about them, TELL it and be SPECIFIC. Generic compliments are worse than insults !

- or simply go to their web platform and send a personal, more detailed message. Remember – personal style + genuine feedback / compliments works best !

How to structure your social networking campaign:

- Spend one hour a day

- Find only 1 –2 potential allies a day

– Repeat the game Monday to Friday. On weekends I recover from the crusade.

- check your interaction over 1 – 2 weeks. How do you get along with your “new” friends. Is the conversation fruitful ? If yes, include the ally in your precious 150 list.

Thx MD yeah and what you said also about, to do it right your best results are going to be connecting with a couple allies at a time. Effective relations don't come in volumns… well at least not right away!

I will spread the news of your blog svcs – highly recommend :)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      haha Robin,

thanx a lot ! Yeah – quality over quantity ANYTIME. It's more feasible and fun to grow in tiny steps anyways.
This method beats procrastination and makes sure you gradually expand every single day.
Thanx for spreading the love, Robin !

I’m not sure if I really want to network with 150 total people overall, ya know? I do see its merits and it’s perfect for many people but I guess just because I’m very antisocial I’d rather have a group of maybe 20 very, very influential people, ya know?

Although, thinking this through, in some ways if I went after 20 “core” people the network would grow just because of association to the point that it would hit 150.

Dammit Mars, stop being right. I guess that’s what I get; no top 50 netsetter for me :/ – eh, I’ll keep it up; brofist.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Murray,

I should have included that this is going to be your extended network. Kind of like GOOD acquaintances – that's why I call them allies. Of course you are going to go much small with your core CORE relationships – otherwise you'd tweeting and mailing your soul off every single day ;)

  • http://www.waliqfactory.com/ Michel J. Gagnon

Very useful Mars. It can sometimes be daunting to develop meaningful relationships online. There's so many interesting people out there, and it can take up so much time.

I like the way you structured your approach. Thanks!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Haha, thanx Michel.

I luv structure and strategy in my (business) life. It helps me with my focus and getting things actually done. This approach really works, and it's ridiculous fun, too.

    Hola Mars,

Compared to my usual novel like comments on your posts, this may seem like a drive-by lol. But it's not!

I really like your 150 strategy – definitely keeps you focussed on the peeps that matter most to you. I think I may just go ahead and implement such a list! Do I really need to tell you that you'll be on it – up top?! :)

Thanks for the idea and for sharing another of your insightful posts.

Oh, I almost forgot… “I really like the writing style on your kick-ass blog and I admire your passion and your mission to Spread Your Influence!” :D

    Cheers

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Haha Ingrid,

      sometimes brevity rules.
The 150 idea works out well for me – it's super-fun and even more effective !

      I'm glad I'm part of your core network – sweet-a-licious ;)

And thanx for the kick-ass compliment – I'm doing by base to make this blog more epic with every new tweak and post.

You shine your way, Ingrid !

    Hi Mars,

Powerful tips here. Hitting a clear cut number and building out from there leverages your time.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Hey Mars,

Just read about the Dunbar number and that's what you have here – 150 connections. Recently I went about going on a Twitter diet and now I'm down to about 100-130 folks I'm following.

I too prefer Twitter. It can be addictive as there are so many great posts being shared. Lately, I've been on a blog commenting frenzy. :P Moreover, it's nice to see you give us a blueprint for how you socialize.

Great to know and adapt as I'm sure I can follow the ideas thereon so that I'll expand my digital empire.

    Awesome share Mars!

    Talk soon,
    Thu

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Thu,

Twitter is the holy grail for me. I have also cut down my number – only the peeps I constantly interact with are on my lists now. This approach has done magic for me in terms of reaching people and building awesome relationships. It's fun to network with goals and focus, and then see what kind of mavericks you meet along the digital path :)

I think the “inner fire” is the most important part.

They can have all the other things, but if they don't care, then why bother…

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Yeah – they to do their stuff with endless fire inside :)

  • http://blog.esimplestudios.com Gabriele Maidecchi

You have the ability to put in words what one knows by instinct but can't quite figure out on his own.
I have my Google Reader list of awesome blogs and my Twitter lists of awesome people I follow, and through both of them I manage to find more awesome people to add to each of them, and so on.
It's geometric progression, good stuff sticks to good stuff.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Gabriele –
yeah, that's awesome advice. If you find one good place, you will usually find another awesome person just from there.

Geometric progression – I like that term ;)

      • http://blog.esimplestudios.com Gabriele Maidecchi

I like it too, sometimes I drop it randomly and all of a sudden everything I say sounds smarter :D

  • http://www.aadithyainfosolutions.com/internet_marketing.asp Internet Marketing

    hi! MarsDorian,

You points out some of the most valuable things that necessary fir exploring and extending business over social network or though social network. Interesting to follow digital marketing strategy to take attention of visitors to your profile page. It is really helpful. I am implemented this strategy but not more convincingly as you have described here. Thanks for sharing.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      haha, thanx

I'm doing my best. It's easy to lose yourself in the world, that's why a little plan helps you with connecting efficiently and most of all – having fun doing it !

  • http://andbreak.com/ Julius

I like your idea here. Have you already found your 150 people? It's true you can't connect with everyone. And you shouldn't spend too much time doing so. Just focus on a core group and engage with them. Nice article Mars ;)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Thanx Julius,

and no – I haven't completed the list yet. It takes lots of focus. I want to find the right peeps, and that will probably take a few years. Step by step, connecting with awesome crusaders from all over the world :)

  • http://feint.me feint

I love the connections I have made through my startup – communicating with other entrepreneurs is seriously the best part of my job. Do the nature of my industry, many of the best connections happen privately through email – very rarely am I contacted by other founders through Twitter or Facebook.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Interesting,

Twitter and Facebook bring my connections to the email level :)
It's awesome what kind of world we experience online – connecting with kick-ass digital crusaders that are on a similar level.
      Let's rock together !

  • http://www.brandonsutton.com Brandon101

Love the 150 idea Mars – thanks for sharing. I recently trimmed down my follows on Twitter, but I still have the looming task of creating a list of true like-minded crusaders to follow for the best, most inspiring content. This post really hit home for me and I'm starting that process right now. :)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Awesome Brandon,

I have spent at least a week on trimming down my own Twitter list. It takes work, but it's so worth it ! There are simply too many peeps that you don't have any relationship with. I have really made focus my new religion – focusing on the people and the stuff that truly matters ! Tell how that works out for you, Brandon !

Quality over quantity. The old mantra used to be get as many followers as you could. Just tweeting certain keywords makes auto “followers” magically appear but this is hardly useful. There are so many awesome people out.
