The Only Advice on Marketing You Will Ever Need

personal branding marketing

Parka Blogs

I luv marketing – a lot.

But marketing and branding can be a complex jungle, especially if it’s the first time you step into it.

Soo many things to remember if you want to market your business online, or simply want to build a powerful digital presence.

Your story, your design, your social media interaction, your services and products…the list goes on. And on.

Don’t despair. Point that loaded gun away from your head. Help is here !

Focus – which is my new religion, is the best way to simplify any topic. If you dig down the marketing mess, you will find the essence of everything.

And now…ladies and gentlemen, the marketing advice to kill any further marketing advice, served in 2 juicy parts.

Ready ? Here it goes:

Provide the most ass-kicking value…

D’uh !

We humans are goal-oriented.

Science found out that we are the happiest when we make progress. Today must be better than yesterday. The work we do must be more efficient. We want more improvement by using less resources.

The grrreatest products in the world have dramatically enriched our life:

  • Take your music wherever you go – the mp3 player.
  • Send your mail for free to any place in the world within a nano-second – email.
  • Work with a computer wherever you want – the notebook
  • Have (almost) unlimited sex with women without worrying about shipping (too many) children – the condom
  • Learn the best marketing and branding advice the most fun way possible – marsdorian.com

The grrreatest services and products have high value – they drastically improve our short existence in one way or another.

And valuable doesn’t mean “useful” in the stricter sense – entertainment by  itself isn’t a necessary enhancement of living, yet it is one of the most successful sectors of business.

Lesson: bring the most value you can possibly can to your (potential) reader or client.

Two epic ways to accomplish that:

1. Fill a need. Fill a need much better than anyone else. Fill a need that people don’t even know ( Did we really craved the Iphone before it came out ? )

2. My personal favorite: Fill your own need. Check out the internet and see what’s missing. No kick-ass blog on moviemaking ?

Bad, impersonal digital consulting ? No easy way to do online biz ? Whatever bothers the heck out of you – chances are, it bothers someone else as well. Now go out and fix it !

If you bring a lot of value, you have good chances of succeeding. But you also have a big problem – lots of people in the world provide kick-ass value. You have to compete with all of them – on price ! And competing on price is a bad place to be.

the Force of Good

That’s why you need the other part to be super-successful:

Provide the most ass-kicking value

and make it as unique as freaking possible !

This is the magic that makes all the difference. If you are “just” valuable, you face an endless ocean of competition. But by focusing own the things that make you unique, you bring yourself to a place where you forget how to spell competition.

  • Zappos is the worlds most favorite shoe company, but Zappos is not a shoe company. It’s a brilliant customer service company.
  • thousands of wine evangelists, but only one Gary Vaynerchuk. He stood out by digitalizing his business and entertaining the audience with a take-no-prisoner-down-to-earth show on wine.

Standing out and being unique doesn’t mean you have to do crazy shit. It can be the little things that make all the difference.

  • Maybe you are have the most quirky blog design
  • your consulting is the most heart-warming and passionate experience ever
  • Your writing is so audacious, it makes Naomi Dunford blush

The main magic to make something unique is either to solve a problem in a way that has never been done before, or to totally bring YOURSELF into your product or service. Or both.

It’s my mantra that I inhale like mint-flavored air. Hopefully, it will become yours as well ;)

Action time ! 2 things I want you to now !

Tell me what you will do now to make your services/presence/products super-valuable and ass-kicking unique ?

I was in despair. This was the exact pep talk I needed. Going forth to be ass kicking awesome.
Have you read Happy Birthday to You by Dr. Suess? There is a great part about shouting loud “I am I, I am not just a ham or a clam or a dusty old jam of gooseberry jam. I am me and that's a great thing to be.” I would do well to remember that I am not a dusty jam of gooseberry jam.

      Hey Kristin,
never read it. But the quote you got from there sounds grrreat.

    Hi Mars,

Great advice on marketing. And a really catchy title too!

“2. My personal favorite: Fill your own need. Check out the internet and see what’s missing. No kick-ass blog on moviemaking ?”

Yup. This is my favorite too. If I am searching for something and I do not find something online, then there must be other people searching for it too. Why not create it?

You are spot on in saying that you/your product/service has to be unique to compete. You must have a unique selling point and a unique value proposition.

    Thanks for the post.

Love this Mars. It's amazing at how many people just try to create some shoddy product and hope that they can trick people into buying it…that's a hard mindset to change…

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Yeah, that's pretty scammy. You want to make sure you offer something valuable and unique that hopefully blows
      your customers mind !
With enough passion and a sincere desire, it can be done !
