4 Creative Ways to Make Money Online

Post image for 4 Creative Ways to Make Money Online

The internet is still a teenager – enough energy to burn the sun, but no clear direction where to go (yet).

Like any teenager, it has unlimited potential, and more and more people are using it to earn a living online. Most aim for the mediocre path, while others strike for more creative goals.

I want to introduce some of these brave souls. All of them are building their digital career through either offering new services or putting an older business model to a new model. I found all of these to be creative, and I know they will inspire you to spread your influence and build a killer online career.

  • Create a super-specific service

smiling-kitty-225x300

Catherine Caine is a female energy blast from beawesomeonline . She specializes in web consulting and came up with a pretty cool idea to expand her services: Tagline creation !

Now if you read this blog diligently, you will know by now that I put crazy emphasis on your (brand) story and statement. A cool tagline is essential to any online platform, because it tells the reader/potential client what this whole site is all about.

Catherine knows that too, and that’s why she put that idea into a business model: She helps her clients find an “awe-some” tagline and charges 50 $ dollars for 5 lines. 400 $ were earned the week Catherine started the service. Looks like someone found a golden niche.

Lesson: Everyone’s doing “broad” consulting. If YOU want to do (online) consulting, stand out by being specific with your services. Is there one exact thing in your niche that YOU can help people with ?

  • Sell And Develop Your Own Apps (even if You Don’t Know Crap About Software !)

hand_energy

What do Dragos Roua, Nathan Hangen and Pat Flynn all have in common ?

They are ALL hardcore fans of my blog.

Maybe.

What they really have in common is they create Iphone applications – small, downloadable programs that add new features to the device ( calendar, timer, game etc.)

They pay money for the development, and then wait for the approval (Apple doesn’t accept any app !). Once you are in, you wait for hungry customers who are willing to pay a few bucks for your creation !

This is a pretty sustainable business, and especially Pat is killing it with earning a few thousands a month from it.

Lesson: Even you don’t know crap about tech and apps, you can still make a sustainable business from it. Nathan and Pat don’t program the apps themselves – they spend the money on those who know.

  • Make The Publisher Lick The Dust. And Become Your Own.

what the heck

Both Dragos Roua and Nicholas from Sitesketch101 have published their own, REAL books (the thing with paper !) via Amazon’s createspace.

Hold still for a moment and think about this: You can now distribute your own, real books WITHOUT a publisher from any place in the world.

You can close your mouth now ;)

I think this is a BRILLIANT of distributing your work. Getting a book deal anywhere in the world is as nerve-wracking as slamming your head against a metal wall. Now you just get your own free account, and create your own book without even paying for the setup. You only pay a share when you sell your magic.

I haven’t used this service myself, but in a few years, when I’m rich, famous and got enough value to share, I will use this ;)

You can also offer your own music and movies. Nice.

Lesson: Kick the gate keepers back into oblivion. Have a great book idea ? Go publish ! Are you a musician ? Self-distribute online. Filmmaker ? Offer pay on demand. Note: this works best if you already have some kind of (online) authority ! So build your kick-ass online presence first and sell your magic later !

  • Create A Cool And Genuine Online Course

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

Can you take something like affiliate marketing, and create a cool online course around it ? Of course.

When I first heard about affiliate marketing, it sounded uncomfortable in my ears.

But then I found out that some of my favorite mavericks are doing it, and I dived deeper into it.

Affiliate marketing is simply this: You promote someone else’s service/product and enjoy a commission from the sale. In order to make this work the genuine and valuable way, you should OWN the product/ service you actually promote !

Most people who are working online are making money from this model  – big sites like Copyblogger are solely based on that business model.

My friend Corbett Bar from Thinktraffic has a very cool course on ethical affiliate marketing – and I’m a member of it.

In fact, I think it’s so cool and genuine, that I became an affiliate for it (my first time ever !).

It’s called Affiliate Marketing for Beginners and it’s $47 and it’s available for purchase starting  today, Tuesday, August 10th. That price is for encouraging early adopters, and after 48 hours, it will raise to 87 $.

say hello to Corbett

corbett

I luv the course because:

  • it’s based on an ethical approach to affiliate marketing that doesn’t require any pushy sales tactics or promotion of any products you don’t really believe in.
  • it doesn’t require any knowledge of how to build a website or sell anything online. It’s a step-by-step guide to making your first affiliate sale online.
  • If you think that’s worth a try, go ahead and see it for yourself.

If not, just ignore the last 100 words ;)

    Profile2009

Honestly, the digital world is full of endless potential. By either offering unique services, cool self-published books and videos, or valuable ethical affiliate marketing courses, you will earn a nice online income by doing valuable work that inspires.

Do you have a great way of earning (some) income online, or do you want to share an original idea ?

Shoot me in the comments !

And please retweet and Facebook-share this post !

Want to turn visitors into raving customers ?

    Fuck yeah !

This is my favorite ecourse for people that HATE sleazy online marketing but want to make money from their site. It's genuine, entertaining and packed with valuable info that helps you make your website profitable like hell.

BTW - I use it myself successfully. It rocks. That's why I'm an affiliate for it ;) Get more visitors to buy your stuff image

      Hi Mars,

Great ideas to make some income online.

I really like how Pat outsources the iphone apps. I think I will try this. We would just need to come up with an original idea, and outsource the programming.

I think affiliate marketing is also a great way, and I currently follow that model.

      Kindest,
      Nabeel

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

        Nabeel,

yeah – he's doing a grreat job, just like Dragos. You only need some money to invest ( I believe it's like 500 – 1000 for the development ) and then just go ahead. I don't think it's my style (yet), but hey, thanx heavens not everyone is like me.

Tell me when I can expect yours, Nabeel ;)

    • Devesh

      Hey Mars,

      Really awesome post, as always.

I think it's all about standing out from crowd. I really like the Caine's service of creating awesome tag-lines.

Thanks for sharing this great Post Mars.

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Yep, Catherine's service is awesome – she's the energetic kind of type, and always comes up with creative ideas. I truly believe that the mix of being super-UNIQUE + bringing ENDLESS VALUE creates a super brand !

        • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

Thank you both! Using your strengths is the best tactic EVER. :)

    • Bud Hennekes

Good stuff man. I plan on developing an I-phone ap in the near future. :)

Congrats on becoming an affiliate of a product you love.

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

        Hey Bud,

awesome, just go ahead. And yeah – it's a kick-ass program, and I'm glad to be a part of it.

The course is useful for everyone want to establish a kick-ass blog presence through SEO and keywords. Highly recommend it.

    • http://trafficcoleman.com/ TrafficColeman

Yea.. I got an easy making money online tip.

Go to rushcard.com website and sign up for an affiliate account, and you can promote their site and get $5 every time anyone get an free prepaid card through them and get it activated.

This is so easy and fun because the card is free and people love free stuff, I get about 100 sign ups a month just for fun.

Its just another way I bring easy money to my company, finding something for free people will love..and offer it to them..It cant get any easier than this.

      “TrafficColeman “Signing Off”

    • http://lexgarey.com Lex Garey

      Hey Mars,

This is great. I've been getting so sick and tired of seeing essentially the same products or services pop up everywhere. It really motivates me to push to create something really special that will turn heads. :)

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Hey Lex, I believe you can always mix a lot of stuff.
Diversity is where the fun is. Offer some unique and ass-kicking consulting, and have some good affiliate marketing for back-up.

It's all about being creative and using your reputation for maximum impact. Space is the limit ;)

    • philjpjohnson

Mars, hope you are keeping well mate? Just stopping by to say hello, then I noticed this cool post… and you just made my ears prick up (or should that be eyes pop out??) with the bit about publishing yourself.

Now, I've been working on written material for a while now, with the hope that someday I'll be able to write from the recliner on a sunny beach somewhere… this may just be a step closer to that reality :]

Top post as always mate. Take care, speak soon!

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

        Heya Phil,
long time no see and hear !

So you already have an idea ? that's awesome, do you consider createspace or lulu ? I can't wait to use that service myself – it's so exciting, and I'm hearing so many gooood things about it.

I hope you are kicking ass, Phil !

        • philjpjohnson

Yeah, I'm seriously considering Createspace right this moment as we speak!! I'll let you know how it goes!

I'm kicking serious ass Mars, one ass at a time ;]

    • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

Thanks for this article, Mars. I have to mention that the tagline service is my most fun one!

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

My pleasure – that idea is so cool I should have come up with it ;)

    • Eric_EdenJournal

I always like reading about how others are making money online. The tag line gig is really awesome.

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Yeah – it's awesome. Catherine's tagline service is the reader's favorite so far. And that comes at no surprise.

    • http://www.missiondrivenbrand.com rpene

      Great post buddy!

I found a way to get a “text message” business card…and I showed a few of my friends and they were like, “thats cool”…it's a free service…but I'm thinking that because a lot of my friends aren't as computer savvy as I am (some don't even have a twitter or facebook lol) I'll just charge them a few bucks to get it going for them…who knows mayb there might be more people like these guys lol

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

That's cool – so you code this yourself ? Well, the mobile industry is space-rocketing up the stratosphere – if you can create that app for Iphone/Android etc. you have a pretty sweet business model. *Definitely* consider treating it like a real business – if it's goood, it has massive chances !

    • http://twitter.com/dragosroua Dragos Roua

Well, you can bet I'm a hardcore fan of your blog. :-) And I also do iPhone apps, with the only difference that I like to code them my own. I put my time where my mouth is, when it comes to getting brilliantly better at something. Even when, or especially when, this is something is creating an iPhone app from the scratch. Thanks for the mention and congrats on the post. :-)

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Hey Dragos, the pleasure is all mine.

Man, you code them from scratch ? That is brilliant, I wouldn't even know where to start. You do fulfill your tagline promise – becoming brilliantly better at anything. I also love the createspace idea, which I will use in the future. Once I gain way more reputation/knowledge/experience, I will shoot for it !
Thanx for being an inspiring individual !

    • Julius

Nice post Mars. I enjoyed reading about all these different ways you can make money online.

I like the idea of making money through iPhone apps so I am definitely going to try that out soon. Thanks for sharing these interesting ideas and people.

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

        Hey, my pleasure, Julius.

Those are some incredible peeps – I have NEVER thought about Iphone apps before, but I know that these guys are killing it. Nathan and Pat don't understand much of the coding process I think, but they are outsourcing the entire process.
So, why not get into it yourself ?
You may want to contact them yourself if you have a question.
I know Dragos is very helpful (asked him many times;)

        Good luck

    • http://www.supercarly.co.uk Carly Wood

      Hey, good article.

I'd love to design an app and outsource it like you've mentioned above, I have an iPad and the apps are lacking for it at the moment. I'd have to come up with a good idea first though. Sadly I don't have the money to invest but who knows – I have a lot of programming friends and i'm great with usability and coming up with concepts, so maybe one of them'll wanna work with me for cheap!

“Stand out by being specific with your services. Is there one exact thing in your niche that YOU can help people with?”

I've always thought this, before I even knew about internet marketing. I used to think 'instead of saying i can design sites for everyone, I could just design them for students and put flyers up around uni' when I was a student.

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

        Hey Carly,

yeah – either outsource the process or make your friend to do it – be sure to compensate him/her for that, or it's over for gooood ;)

I believe in that exact niche service. The moment Catherine came up with it was the moment she made money with it – because it's super valuable and quite unique.

I hope this inspires you to come up with grrrreat stuff yourself, like what you did with the students in your uni time.

        Shine on Carly !

        • http://www.supercarly.co.uk Carly Wood

I love Catherine's style – I've read over a couple of her blog posts this afternoon and they're fab.

Thanks for your reply! And yeah compensation is required: wouldn't wanna anger my friends… I'd expect the same!

          • http://www.BeAwesomeOnline.com Catherine Caine

            Thanks Carly! :)

    • http://trafficcoleman.com/ TrafficColeman

      Hi Mars

You asked at the top “Do you have a great way of earning (some) income online, or do you want to share an original idea ?

I left one of my ways of making money yesterday..But I see you deleted it..any reason why..just asking..

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

        Hey Antonio,

I'm very picky – as soon as I see a link in a comment and I don't like it, I delete it.
It's nothing personal, I just don't allow a certain flavor to my blog.
        Your comment are always welcome.

    • http://www.financiallydigital.com Nunzio Bruno

Great Article!! You see a lot in the “make money online” idea space but a lot of those suggestions really don't hold any water. I think you identified 4 that have a lot of potential to actually generate revenues for people interested in getting involved online. Being super specific was probably my favorite because it helps you get away from the path pf mediocrity and build authority around what you do.

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

        Hey Nunzio,

        long time no see !
yeah – I luv creative ways ! Being specific in an overcrowded niche is the way to go – totally. Catherine Caine is kicking-ass doing that, and soon, I'll join her.
        How's your business doing ?

        • http://www.financiallydigital.com Nunzio Bruno

I know I know! I got a little bogged down with work and trying to get ready for the fall semester – first time prof of economics this fall at Bay Path College :). Business could always be bigger and better though right! I'm thinking you and I should work on something together. Between the both of us there's a ton of energy and experience and we could really bring something of value to people :) Just my thought though..

          • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Hey Nunzio, I'm pretty occupied with a number of projects right now, but if you have a kick-ass business idea that you HAVE to share, I'm always open ears.

    • http://www.shakeoffthegrind.com Joe – Shakeoffthegrind

Thanks for the great suggestion and resources. It is truly amazing how publishing and distribution has lost the middle man, and an is open market for anyone who has valuable content to contribute. I think the e-course is also a great idea and can be something that really provides some income. Great post!

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

        Heey Joe,

yeah – the middle man is past his prime.

The future will be even more intense – one person will be able to publish and distribute everything by himself. The middle man will not exist in any area – we'll see more giant portals like Amazon giving us the possibility to produce everything we want !

        Grrrrrreat times ahead ;)

    • http://hypno.co.nz/blogs Mike Reeves-McMillan

A printed book is good for authority and somewhat for the differentiation value vs an ebook, but it's more work for less margin.

I have a book with CD included which I sell at $29. You won't get much more than that for a print book, CD or no CD. It's a couple of hundred pages, so quite short.

If I split the content (words and audio) into two online courses, which I'm seriously considering, then pricing them at $29 *each* would still deliver a lot more value than most people are putting into their $29 products.

Plus there's virtually no overhead to that, whereas I have about $11 overhead on the print book + CD.

It would be a bit less if I was doing it via CreateSpace or Lulu, without the CD, but I got it printed locally since I need to assemble the two components myself, and want to minimise the shipping costs. Also, if you are holding the stock and shipping out all the books, rather than having your print-on-demand publisher handle fulfillment, you get to capture the customer's email address, and we all know how valuable that is.

Depending on your requirements and your geographical location, by the way, Lulu may provide better value for bulk orders than CreateSpace. They have a slightly different pricing model. But CreateSpace gets you into Amazon's catalogue for free.

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

        woooooow Mike,

that's what I call an killer-ass explanation – nice ! Some valuable thoughts you share here
I agree that it gives you a nice authority boost if you publish your books in the physical form. I don't know anyone (yet) who makes a full time income from that, but it's a nice supplement to your overall branding strategy.
I will definitely check out Lulu and createspace even more when I'm ready – but the idea of publish-on-demand is just to enticing !

Mike, I hope you have massive success with your book / cd.
Bless them with a nice cover, that's in line with your branding style.
And thanx for putting sooo much value into your comment !

      • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

If you pay the few bucks for CreateSpaces distribution package, you can get copies on a dime.

The way I figure it is if you're going to be a big boy, why not act like a big boy. What do big boys do? They put books on shelves, and that's the game I'm trying to figure out. That reminds me, need to ask my local BN why my book isn't there :)

    • http://www.socialcubix.com/services/facebook-connect Facebook Connect Integration

Awesome stuff! Great ideas to earn income online, especially the Tagline idea is just Awe-Some and it sounds cool too.

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

yep – that's the overall favorite so far – good ideas DO spread !

    • http://www.thelifething.com Go Jonny Go

Iphone apps you say? Tell me more about this I…..phone.

It's a pretty cool invention from that fruit company !

      • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

making apps is like creating blogs 5 years ago…great market right now.

    • http://jdmeier.myopenid.com/ J.D. Meier

I'm a fan of productizing yourself … especially timeless works that you can sell the rest of your life.

In the book world, we call them “Evergreen.”

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Yeah – when I'm going to publish my masterwork, I will make it timeless as well !
Evergreen in fact is one of my favorite words in 2010, I use it for timeless blog posts as well !

    • http://tycoocashflow.com Johnny P

This is really cool, I really enjoy how Pat Flynn is doing it, he's got so many ways and he's always sharing how to do it. Although the other four ways that you just talked about, I'm going to jot down because they are awesome. Thanks for sharing those Mars!

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

        Hey man, my pleasure.

Yeah, Pat got like 12 different income streams – it's crazy ! He's doing a grrreat job in Business and sharing it with the world.

    • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

Hey Mars, not sure why I didn't see this show up in my pingbacks, but thanks for the mention. I'm passionate about building new businesses and revenue streams, and if Apple is going to do the hard work of distributing millions of devices, there's no reason why I shouldn't take advantage of it.

To date, my first app has sold around 500 copies and is picking up steam daily…I'm pumped!

Also, don't forget that you can get not just on Amazon, but Barnes and Noble (search for Beyond Blogging there) and on the iPad through Lulu.

      It's brilliant.

      Keep rocking.

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

        Hey Nathan,

yeah – you are doing awesome stuff – I like the way you keep expanding your digital empire by coming up with new business ideas !

500 copies ? Not bad. Sounds like serious momentum.
About the self-publishing: I have heard about Lulu as well, and it sounds like an awesome concept.
But isn't Barnes and Noble just about the American market ?
And when you self-published your book online, what do you actually pay for ? The fee with every item sold, a general set-up fee, or both ?
        I'm curious.

        • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

BN is probably just an American Market, but it's still a big one.

When you publish online, you can buy your own copies on the cheap and sell them yourself, or you can sell via Amazon, where you'll make around $8-$10/copy, depending on the price.

I was thinking of creating a quick course that teaches people how to do it all, but I'm not sure if there's a need for it.

    • http://www.webpagelottery.com Andre Teh

I must agree that creativity is what makes one stand out from the crowd. I remember seeing a website where people post what they willing to do for 5 bucks. I think it's a pretty good idea.

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

hahah, that's sounds like a funny idea.

    • MikePiper

As someone who makes a living self-publishing paper books, thumbs up for suggesting CreateSpace. It's a ton better than Lulu or many of the others.

If you want maximum profit margin though, I'd actually suggest going through Lightning Source. They won't hold your hand through the process as much as CreateSpace, but the profit per book will be significantly higher. (It depends on the length and price of the book of course. But as an example, mine is just shy of 70%.)

Also, just like CreateSpace and Lulu, LightningSource automatically gets you onto Amazon and bn.com.

And in case anybody is wondering, no, I don't have any relationship with LightningSource. I'm just a happy customer. :)

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Hey Mike, thanx for the tip,
very valuable. I will check it out because I'm interested in a diverse range of opportunities. It's the first time I have ever heard of LightningSource, but it sounds damn interesting – especially if it offers your book on Amazon as well.
        Thanx !

        • MikePiper

Also of note given the talk above about eliminating middlemen: Lightning Source is actually the printing company that is used if you go through many of the other self-publishing companies (Lulu included).

If self-publishing is something you're considering, I'd suggest checking out Aaron Shepard's Aiming at Amazon and/or POD for Profit. The business model he lays out in those books (plus a little adsense and affiliate income) has worked well for me. :)

    • http://www.InternetMarketingAce.com Joel Gray

Truly creative! I appreciate your fresh ideas on making money online. Keep it up. :)

      • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

        hahha, thanx man.

Those come all from my friends, but I'm implementing some of them myself. They work !

    • http://www.joshualance.com Bangor71

As a fine artist, I'm always finding what niche, what need I can fullfill for my artlovers and clients. So far, I have sold prints on Fine Art America, it's a cool POD service where anyone can buy prints of your originals, or even your originals! I have sold about 5 prints this year, but for $30/year, it has potential and costs are easily covered if you sell one print. Second, I created my first book on Blurb.com. Came out great, and sold a few books. But I would like to check out Amazon's Createspace, it sounds like it may have more potential and profit from what I heard. The tricky part is that as an aritist, you have to focus on your work first and not overdo it with secondary sources. I've tried Etsy, but it's more for crafts than fine art. Love the site, keep up the good work!

    • http://twitter.com/lifeisanartform Polina Khoroshko

Thanks for the great post. The app creation model has been haunting me for a while I think I am going to give in and brood on it seriously now and see what I can come up with.
