geek marketing

Hello my Digital Crusaders,

This article is about being geeky, and why this is the best way to promote your business and ideas. After this experience, you will have all the requirements to become a successful geek yourself.

Let’s start this session with a guy,…

The wine guy

I don’t like wine. I don’t like the look and the way it tastes. I think it’s disgusting. But you know what ? I watch a Yankee talk (scream?) about it every other week, because I’m amazed by his passion and they way he shows it. You know I’m talking about Gary V. This guy has build a kick-ass personal brand around his digital whine show. A lot of his fans (like me) couldn’t care less about the smelly liquid, but he’s sooo captivating, that you WANT to know more. Gary V. is a geek.

Why geeks are successful

True geeks gain a massive following in their niche – they captivate the audience with their knowledge and shiny passion. They know everything about their subject, because they live and breath it day and night. They are fanatics, but in a good way. Their obsession is so strong, that it will heavily influence you. A master geek has the power to turn YOU into a geek. And when that happens, everything is possible.

Let me show you two digital geeks who dominate their topic:

mefortwitter Everett Bogue is obsessed with minimalism. He finds that passion in everything he does, be it business, cooking or lifestyle design. When you enter his minimalist world, you want to become a part of it.

Not only is he living and breathing that part, but he’s also owning the keyword. Type minimalist in Google and see what I mean.

301f467 Chris C. Ducker. He owns an outsourcing company in the Philippines. Now this guy is luving the virtual assistant idea. He blogs, makes videos and even Ustream sessions about it – with an infectious smile on his face. You know how he calls his ebook ? VA – saving the day the virtual way !

(Hint: What defines a successful geek: He makes you feel shameful if you don’t share the same obsession )

I’m telling you – by the end of this year I will have a VA myself. And I’ll blame Chris for that.

Both of them are rocking their business the geeky way.

Upgrade your inner geek in 3 quick steps:

Level 01 – Find your fire, and specialize

This is super-easy. Everything that gives you that sunny-in-your-tummy feeling has geek potential. Ideally, you want to make it your job. If you are into charity, turn that into geek magic and become specific. What do you like especially about it ? The giving, the community feeling, the idea of making a difference, helping people in need ? Whatever it is, pick the strongest one and own that keyword. Become Sherry, the go-giver-girl.

Level 02 – breath it like the mint-flavored air

You got your topic, now become a master. Learn everything about it. The pros, the cons, the alpha and the omega. Fully immerse yourself in it. Treat your topic like an ocean, and dive deeply into it. Never surface again. Put in your 10,000 hours and became a genius. Don’t do it all day (you need variety), but do it everyday, for the rest of your freaking life !

Level 03 – Unleash it

Promotion time. If you think you have a topic that doesn’t interest people, then you are right.  Because that’s the kind of impression you will give people. No one will care if you don’t care.

So, let’s say you are a vegetable geek, and you have a blog which you want to turn into a business. You now could blog about it, and say why eating healthy is cool and useful, or you could become geeky and specific about it:

  • make videos on how you cook and eat your veggie-meals (along with all the screw ups)
  • have a web design that’s green and equals vegetables
  • Nominate your favorite easy-to-cook veggie-meal of the week
  • Call your readers Veggers
  • post a veggie photo-series, and make funny faces
  • tell me what eating veggies should be considered a religion

You know what I mean. Geek all the way.

I know this is over-the-top, but that’s what will make the biggest impact. The biggest and most successful influencers are geeks themselves.

How far can you take this ? Ultra-far. If you think you have reached a limit, then you aren’t geeky enough.

playful Geeks rule the world. It’s not a belief, it’s a fact.

You will only make your customers and clients geeky about your products/services if you are geeky about them yourself. So when you talk and write about your passion, blow the world away with your knowledge and fire. Choose the keyword that people must associate with you, and own it. Find a cool word that harmonizes with your name. Your name is Wayne, and you luv those vegetables ? Become Veggie-Wayne !

The world is all yours.

What’s your object of geekiness ? And how do you show it ?

And please retweet and Facebook-share this message !

PS: A strange thing has happened: I have started drinking whine now. You know who’s fault that is.

Want to turn visitors into raving customers ?

A large portion of my blog is devoted to my love of kitschy & bizarre foods. I'm completely fascinated by them.

The awesome thing is I've made more connections and received more work offers, etc from writing about grody foods than I think I ever could have if I'd gone the safe path and made yet another writer's site filled with blandly inoffensive posts about writing.

It's awesome because I'm having a load of fun, clients see the real me and who cares if I'm turning off 95% of potential clients – the 5% who get a kick out of me is potentially more work than a dozen Tracys could do!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

haha, that's the way to go, Tracy !

you are the perfect geek, full of passion, and enough edginess to scare the bystanders away. I believe if you are not over the top with your love, you shouldn't bother at all.
And the success you are having proves that point.
      Geeks unite !

    Great tips there Mars.

These points raise the topic of passion and your interests. If you choose to follow your passion, only then can you become a geek.

I agree with you Mars, when they are perceived as geeky and passionate towards their niche, they become an authority in their niche. People begin to follow them and their advice.

    Kindest,
    Nabeel

      Thanx Nabeel,
excessive passion is infectious. Find a way to display that, and you are riding the golden lane !

2 objects here Mars: cash gifting and personal development. I've written 8 ebooks on the work at home activity known as gifting and run the most comprehensive cash gifting blog on earth.

As for personal development it's also in my blood. 120 plus videos on youtube in 4 weeks. Over 1000 inspiration quotes penned. The stuff is what I live for.

Being geeky means being an expert while falling in love with your work, so it doesn't feel like work. People sense this and are drawn to you. It's an attractive quality, geekiness is.

    Ryan

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Yeah, you are a wild geek, Ryan.
I luv your qoutes, and recently started watching your vids.
I have seen your tweets and ebooks too, your fingers must be burning. Do you have a hard time sometimes promoting that message about cash gifting ? It does have a negative flavor to it, but probably because I don't understand it (yet)

      • Freakmasterturner

No he doesn't have a hard time to promote cash gifting because there is no conscience in him. He even suggests cash gifting would be the same like paying it forward which actually is a quite social concept.
Congratulations, nice fans you have here.
If I were you I would carefully think about why my work and posts attract people like him.
If you like it or not you have a responsibility here.

        • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Everyone who's interested in my blog and behaves is allowed to join the conversation. It's obvious that the audience is diverse. Instead of worrying what he does, concentrate on what you can bring to the table. My only responsibility is to follow my bliss and to share my ideas with the world, that's what I can influence.

  • Ali Starbright

“Geek Marketing” – love it. Yes – people who are blindly obsessed with what they love/do will attract and help others.

When I was 12 I was a total Sonic the Hedgehog Geek. Today I make music for the Sonic the Hedgehog games that should have would have should have been. One day soon I will publish them online and maybe release an album called “The Starbright Zone.” It will be a huge success because I am still a Sonic Geek.

Now, the trouble with many activists I know is that they are not geeks for their causes. They are passe blaze.

I've been thinking about the relationship between blogging and fixing up the planet and you've added something really important for me to takeaway. Cheers Mr. Mars.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      awesome man,
I luv Sonic the Hedgehog. And I mean I luv it ! The 2D games were awesome (Sonic 1-3, Sonic and Knuckles) Back in the old days, I used to record the soundtrack from the TV straight into my crappy tape recorder. The melodies are epic, especially the tunes from Sonic 3. Sigh, gooood memory. I miss those times.

    Hey Mars,

Awesome Post dude. You've mentioned some great Points.Becoming a geek is not a hard, it all comes down to passion.
I really like the point 2 “breathing it like the mint-flavored air” Grreat Point dude.

Thanks for sharing this great Post. Great Job Mars.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

thanx Dev, I know you are a geek yourself. You are doing a fine job. Stretch that edge, and keep rocking !

Love this! I am such a geek, but I am a wierd geek in that my interests are scattered all over the place. I've been looking for the one or two things that I can truly geek out about…I need an idea for my other domain and need to get the asylum on a track that works for me more often than not. Still struggling with finding my cause so I can head out into the land of crusading, I guess.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      haha,

just find what really resonates with you, and do that. You know it, because it gives that exciting sensation you won't feel with anything else. Have one major topic, one keyword, and completely own it. If you make a name for yourself, you can spread to any direction. Believe me Jenn, it's way more fun (and more easy for you) to go specific and basic first.
      Focus is everything !

  • http://www.jessilicious.com Jess Webb

Gary V is AWESOME. :) And I'm loving what you've got going on here as well! You've inspired me and started to push me outside of my box (thank you!)… This stuff is freakin' brilliant. ;)

I'm not sure yet what my geekiness is, or what my keyword will be, but it's not far off! :) I'm certainly on track to find it, and I can't wait to rock it out when I do! :D

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Keep going Jess, you have to find that core. Believe me, your (business) life will be so much easier once you figure out what you stand for, in a geeky way.

    Mars,

This is a very interesting post! I guess I don't know where my geek expertise lies. I feel that everyone does need to establish themselves as the expert in their niche. I have always considered myself a psychology geek, so I may work with that. On a side note, I feel you about the VA, and when business gets to the right point, there would be nothing more helpful and efficient. :)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Joe,

if you are heavy into psychology, maybe you should find yourself a specific niche in the broad realm.
Yeah – VAs – I'm going to have one by the end of this year.

Blogs have saved us geeks. Blogs have made it okay for us to be geeks and for us to come out of the woodwork. We always knew we'd take over the world, one super-specilaist subject at a time, but there are dangers.

Blogs have given us an audience; connected us with like-minded individuals and geeky soulmates and given us an arena where we no longer feel the need to check ourselves when we start an animated conversation about the delights of rare tea picked by monkeys on poles, or the anecdotes about getting a jar of Marmite through customs. Our new found freedom of speech has been personally liberating and ego boosting. It has also been a disaster for first date conversation skills.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Tammy,

it definitely has been an ego-boosting ride.
But disaster for first date conversation skills ?
I don't think so. My conversation skills have become so grrreat because of my extra-confidence boost that I got from shooting video etc.
So far, I have only found goood things that came out of geeky blogging experience ;)

Finding passion in what you do is important. I believe that it's the most important thing in blogging anyway. Without passion you won't really come far in life.
Nice article. How is the digital crusade going?

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      hah, passion is priceless.

The crusade is happening, but at a slower pace – the sun in Berlin is burning my body and melting my brain ;)

Mars, just found your blog and like this post. I've been in programming, web development and engineering for 15 years so part of me must be pretty geeky. A friend once described me as a “people person in a geek world”. I've started a blog on personality types and how Myers Briggs coaching can help people find work they love. I can't think of a geek handle at the moment, but I'd love to think of something fun and distinctive. Thanks for the encouragement!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey, my pleasure.

In today's age, it pays off to be a loving geek. Looks like you got your geek on with your personality-type blog. Show that, sharpen your edges the fun way. Never hold back with your geekiness – full-throttle or nothing !

  • http://agilnetwork.com/ Samuel Rodriguez

    Mars,
When sometimes i'm sure i know more than anybody about a topic, i'm tempted to keep it inside, because people tends to react angry or with envy. What i have to do is turn this people in fans and followers. I'll be the leader. Yes!
    Congratulations for this excellent post

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Samuel,

promise me to never ever do that again. You will always piss some people off, it comes with the territory. If you know a lot about a topic, show it, and show it gooood. As long as there's value for people, you can go crazy with it as much as you like.
      Holding back = losing out.
Go geek all the way, Samuel !

  • http://oddlovescompany.com/blog/ Katybeth

Promiscuous Passion is my problem. I love writing. It absolutely gives me that sunny in my tummy experience every time I write a blog post. But I'm never sure if I am on topic. I write a lot about grief and my personal experience but don't have the desire to become a grief geek. I generally take a more humorous point of view I like to share. I like to share my experiences, and offer the opportunity for others to share there's. Looking at how really funny life is when its not even trying….amuse me. Guess, I'm still a geek in training…so thanks for moving me a little further up the wantabe ladder!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

haha, don't let the term geek hinder limit your ideas. Your overall geekiness can spring from a passion for writing very personal life stories. You don't have to be ultra-specific, we're multidimensional beings after all. A stronger focus on one thing can clarify things for you, and that's why I apply it. Whatever part you concentrate on , humor should always be a part of it ;)
