6 Thoughts That Help You Lead an Epic Life

Mars Dorian epic life

There was a time in my life where everything sucked, because I sucked.

I saw how others were shaping their destiny, and I wondered why mine was going down the toilet. Then the moment came where I said: ENough !

To hell with it, I’m going to change this !

(hint: being mad is awesome at times. It gives you the wild energy you need for massive change !)

I took drastic measures, and recreated the way I perceive and live life.

It’s a process that’s still in progress, but I’m closer to where I want to be.

I believe:

In order to kick-ass in both the real and online world, you have to have an extra-ordinary psychology.

Every action and decision you take is shaped by your mindset.

Here are 6 ways of applied thinking that dramatically changed my (digital) destiny:

Work smart, not hard

Gary V. says you have to hustle, and to a certain degree, he’s right.

But working more hours doesn’t mean more quality – it means the opposite. Whenever I work my soul off, I see the quality of my actions decreasing.

And the sad truth is: I don’t really accomplish more. It’s just my society-corrupted mind that makes me want to believe I do.

Focused and intense work in shorter periods is the new way to go for me. I have cut my working time in half by setting ridiculous low time limits. The less time you have, the better your focus on the essential stuff.

It’s fun and effective.

Don’t work hard, work smart. Focus on the most important things, and hack away the unessential. You’ll experience a new level of quality in your actions.

It’s ok to suck…sometimes

I wish I were a magic being with endless energy – but even a fire reactor like me experiences an outage every other day. Back in the days, I used to beat myself up for that, but I have learned.

We are humans, and even the most ambitious need to suck on some days. Whenever that happens to me, I just go with the flow – read a book, watch a movie, or learn Japanese :)

I won’t allow that event to break my mood. I accept it, because I know that those moments make my working periods so much sweeter.

Give yourself permission to be unproductive on some occasions, for the sake of being human my friends. But don’t let it become a habit ;)

Focus is the only god you should pray to

In a past life that I don’t want to remember, I heavenly sucked at using my focus. I just couldn’t keep it – whatever I did, I switched my focus from one thing to the next without finishing one task for good. Needless to say, my life wasn’t as epic as my imagination made me believe.

Thanks to heaven, that changed now. With enough practice, and the determination of a god (Mars is actually the name of one ;), I tamed that beast called focus.

And now I experience a whole different level of life – everything is much clearer now – my relationships, my work and my destiny – everything !

If you want to experience a quality of life that others only dream of having, practice your focus. Concentrate on what you want to have or feel, and ignore everything that stands in your way. It works like white magic !

Abrakadraba.

Don’t look for the approval of others for your mental stability

No matter what you do, there’s always someone who wants to bash you for that. It could be your friend, your family or your partner – it doesn’t matter.

A lot of people that ask me about my future plans always end up shaking their heads. They simply don’t understand what I’m planning to accomplish, and that’s why they criticize it.

Well, that’s their problem. My only concern is to please myself, and those who share a similar vision.

Every morning, I walk to my mirror and say: Mars, you fucking rock !

Stroking your ego is essential – You are the most important person in the universe. It’s time to accept that fact.

Forget about compliments and insults, they are all the same. Someone says you are awesome, and you feel awesome. Someone says you suck, and you feel like crap. Ahh, life doesn’t have to be so terrible.

Promise yourself to be emotionally independent from the good or bad opinions of others.

Never give someone permission over your feelings. You are responsible for your inner state. 100 %.

Epicness begins when comparison ends

This is a biggie – probably practiced by the majority of this planet.  I used to compare myself to other people ALL the time – and it broke my mental neck:

Look, this guy is started blogging with 35, hah, I’m much younger. Crap, this boy is 18, and he’s already making a 5 figure income.

Ahhh, useless ! There’s always someone better or worse, no matter how good/bad you are.

I stopped comparing myself to others, because the only person I have to “beat” is myself. Am I better today than last week ? If the answer is no, I know I need to change something. And that something is almost always smart and massive action. Failing forward, and fast !

Forget about the others, measure YOUR progress.

Tell yourself: How can I make this month better than the last ?

It’s way more fun and productive.

The most important thing is to do things, not to have them

That’s the minimalist soul speaking in me. I recently stopped buying material crap I don’t need, and focused (here’s that word again) on positive action that brings change. The joy from buying new things, no matter how freaking awesome ( a new notebook ) is short-lived. The minute your call it yours, it’s boring. NEXT !

Instead, I concentrate on spreading my digital influence and learning new things about the online world – I’m studying and applying, studying and applying.

Bliss-inspired actions are utlra-fulfilling – no material possession will ever compensate for kicking ass and enjoying it !

Profile2009 Whoosh – that’s a long one. But this is magic that I wanted to share. Spreading one’s influence and building your online business is challenging work.  We all need to nourish our souls, and accept our downsides.

How do you care for your soul and well-being ? What actions do you take to give your life a kick-ass quality ? Share it in the comments, I’m curious ;)

And plz retweet and Facebook-share this mind-magic !

Hey Mars, I'm a new arrival to your blog but I like what I'm reading. Great insights and a rare self-awareness that is critical to personal success. Nice job, Great Blog!
  • thanx, yeah - it starts with self-awareness and that goes to self-recreation.
  • This is awesome Mars...I am feeling the very same.

To help my focus I got myself a coach that helps me keep accountable.
I also have a rule (only implemented today) to have one browser window open at any time so I complete that task before moving on to the next.
Focus and completion ...opportunity surrounds us and we get distracted by the bright and shiny opportunity. When we should be focusing on strategic opportunities :) Love the posts
  • HEy Katey,

you have really a coach ? That is awesome - I seriously thought about getting one myself too, but right now I'm mainly worried about my business, which takes the top spot in my life.

I remember the idea with the one browser window idea - I usually have 10 minimum open all the time ;) I hope your doing fine with your ventures.
  • Hey Mars,

If you are really really worried about your business - you would get yourself a coach. The lesson I learned two weeks ago was if you want to play like an A grader. Then do as an A grader would do.

All the biggest and well known people in online business and internet marketing, have coaches and mentors. Often we know what we should be doing we just aren't :) If you want some support and help let me know and being like minds we might be able to help each other out.
I am about to re-launch a new venture and quite excited about it. It's happening quicker because of Gideon's Rapid Video Blog program and my coach. Hope all goes well

    Love this post!
  • I like Martha Beck's expression that "anything worth doing well is worth doing badly (at first)". As much as we all would like to start anything and be awesome, it really doesn't work that way. Sometimes, you've got to suck - and that's okay.

I won't speak for others, but I'm glad you woke up and starting being the change you wanted to see.
  • Hey Charlie,

yeah, you will always suck in the beginning - better enjoy the process.
Progress happens when you enjoy both the ups and downs of your (working) life.

I'm still not 100% the person I want to be. I need a lifetime for that masterpiece, but it's the journey that brings me the joy. Productivity has changed my life drastically lately, thanks to Ev Bogue and your blog ;)
  • +1 for minimalism

When you cut out all the crap that takes up your time, sucking away at productivity and focus, you'll be able to really work on anything you want.

Keep making things and getting rid of others. Evolve.
  • That's right !

I got this inspiration from Bruce Lee. In an interview he said: focus on what matters. Hack away the unessential.

    Timeless magic !
  • Nice post - links to that strong feeling of self worth we need if we are going to be successful. I love the "OK to suck" too. Sometimes being average is OK. If we strive for perfection in everything we tend to generate ourselves a huge amount of stress.
  • Haha, Ian,

I wouldn't use the average (I'm allergic to that),
but for every energy blast you put out, you need to balance it somehow.

When I'm not kicking ass like I want to, I simply say: ok, today's not your epic day. Take things easy. It will come again !
  • Yetojian
Once saw a writing on a wall somewhere: Money was never the problem, energy is the problem.

Lived a few years on, met a freakish director who said: Energy was never the problem, focus is the problem.

Learned something about it. Interesting, to see it here. He.

  • Focus is everything for me - my new god that I pray to.

If you can't manage your focus, you will not have an awesome life. Period.
Too bad it took me ages to figure that out ;)

    Mars,

This is really an epic post and I totally agree on having the right mindset to propel you forward. I especially like the ones about not comparing yourself to others and to not look for approval from others. I've learned that in life you are responsible for your actions, nobody else and the only thing you can control is yourself. Once you master controlling your thoughts, how you perceive things and your actions, what you do, then you truly will lead an epic life like you said!

    Anna
  • Heya Anna,

most people are really in love with the comparison part of the post. It's deeply inside us - comparing ourselves to the ones that are either better or worse.
I so agree - master your thoughts and you'll master your destiny, no matter what it throws at you !!
  • Elisha Batuncang
This is one kick-ass post. It really reflects about what I am "suffering" now. Focus is the beast that I'm yet to conquer. Please teach us how tame this beast. =)
  • Hey Elisha,

taming the focus is learned by taming it. Seriously, it's practice - nothing else. You start with the task you want to focus on, and everyday you get distracted, you make yourself go back to the game. It's quite challenging in the beginning, but the more you practice it, the easier it gets !

Tell yourself: I'm going to get this task done, no matter what !
  • The comparison part is a hard one to master. Even though we don't necessarily envy other people, we tend to feel the pain when they're achieving what we're aiming for. That's human nature.

I'll start your morning ritual: Michel, you fucking rock!
    Thanks for the thoughts!
  • haha, Michel, NOT comparing yourself is the hardest part, I know from experience. I still do it, but not that often. It's terrible - there's always someone who's way better than you. It just destroys your focus.

Really use that morning ritual - it's powerful as heck, Michel !
  • You're bang on the money here, Mars. I agree with all of these, especially the 'not comparing' bit. I never see other bloggers or artists as my competitors: they're my peers and my community.
  • Hey Kirsty, I believe that's a healthy attitude.

Comparison is poison for your soul - it only comes with side effects. It still happens to me at times, but not as much as it used to be. I now focus on my efforts and how I can become better everyday.
    Awesome mindset, Kirsty !
  • susantblake
Hmm. This morning I am catching up with the blogs I follow, and there is a trend among them about passion, focus, motivation, and super powers. Seems like there's a message here. Thanks Mars!
  • Definitely,

although I found out that pure focus is really the magic bullet here - My mind used to be scattered a few years ago, and since I'm taming that beast called focus I'm experiencing a new quality level of life.
    What do you say ?
  • susantblake
I say that focus is definitely a superpower, and one that can be cultivated. I struggle with it, and when there is so much in the world to wonder at and be curious about, it is easy to flit from one shiny thing to another. But I think focus need not deny wonder; I shall have to think about the benefits of really focusing on the object of my wonder...
  • Steve Scott Site
I like the part about working smarter and not necessarily harder. Hard work is great. In the digital world though, had work does not always paty off, it is more important to be headed in the proper direction.
  • Yeah, definitely, Steve !

Focus is my new religion now - no matter what you want to accomplish, you need outstanding focus to experience a kick-ass quality in your life !

How are you doing, man ? Anything epic happening in your life ;=)
  • Steve Scott Site
For sure, I am in the middle of a six month working tour through Europe. Have Laptop, will travel.

    Mars,

A very inspiring kick in the ass my friend. I have plenty to say about it, so here goes:

    1) Work Smart/Not Hard: For years, we've rewarded people for their efforts more than their results. Hell, most of corporate America was built on this mindset. As it all came tumbling down people realized that results matter more than hours. Managers who measure employee facetime seem ridiculous to me and I'm fortunate not to have one. My social media efforts all have one driving force: Kill lots of birds with one stone. You probably have noticed that from the projects I've suggested to you.

    2) Comparison: This is such deadly way to live your life, yet it's ingrained into us from the time we grow up because of our grades, schools, etc. My whole life up until a few years ago had been about that. IT still creeps in now and then when I meet all those people who are geniuses on paper (ivy league degrees, md's, phd's, etc, etc).

    3) Independent of Good Opinion: This such a peaceful and powerful place to be, Once you do this, then you really start to unleash your most authentic and most magnetic self.

Really, one of my personal favorites of all your posts. Good stuff
  • wooooooooooooooooooooow.

What a kick-ass reply - your comment deserves to be called "epic", Srini !

haha. The things you have just listed here took me a long time to figure out, but that's life. I still have moments where I compare myself to others, despite my experience. Ahh, shucks. Gotta keep the focus rolling.
  • "Never give someone permission over your feelings. You are responsible for your inner state. 100 %." This a lesson I really need to learn. I'm completely guilty of letting another person or people influence my emotions and I can't take it anymore. It's time for me to change that. Right now.
  • Hey Lex, to a certain extent, it still happens to me. But not nearly as much as it used to.

You really want to reach a place where the only thing that changes your states is your thought. I found it frustrating to be the victim of other people's opinions - just like a leaf in the wind.
With constant focus on your core, you'll achieve emotional independence.

    You can do iiiiit !
  • Good post here. Mindset is so key to doing pretty much anything. I don't buy any of this universe-altering law of attraction crap, but here's what I think. We don't have control over everything that happens to us, but we DO have 100% control over how we respond and what our mindset is when things happen. THAT is the key to success. You're right that you can't look to others for that, you have to build it up in yourself or it'll never work.
  • Hey Marek,

I actually used to believe in the law of attraction, but I came to the "bitter" conclusion that you have to put in the hours - nothing comes to you by merely thinking about it.

Like you said, it's only your mind that you can control a 100%, a lot of other things are beyond your control.

BTW - Are you Anthony Robbins fan ? I listen to this guy like...every day ;)

  • I've heard of anthony robbins, but I've never checked much much of his stuff. But I'll take a look!
  • I'm feelin the kick-ass vibes! =]
  • Awesome Lynn, I hope they positively affect you !
  • This just may be my favorite post of yours of all time. Then again, I'm sure I'll feel the same way when I read your next one. You really do rock :)
  • Haha, thanx Jean. I wanted to mix my usual branding stories with a bit of my personal mindset stories.
I'm glad you like it - it's one of my latest life lessons.
  • meganmatthieson
I'll remember the Focus God. :)
  • haha, pray for him - he's worth it ;)
