Konnichi-Wa my Digital Crusaders !

I don’t know about you, but I always want to improve.

And I always want to improve the way I work online.

If you do too, then enjoy the following post. It will show you the most ass-kicking applications I have discovered so far. They have literally spacerocketed my productivity, and brought endless joy into my digital work life.

If you want to achieve your online goals by changing the way you work, get those programs I use on a hourly basis.

They are all FREE (woohoo!), and they will change the way you work online.

Let’s start right now:

Tweetdeck – Twitter is NOTHING without it

tweetdeck

I hated Twitter 2 months ago. Boy, I don’t know what I was smoking back then, but it’s obvious that I use it excessively now. The reason ? I discovered Tweetdeck, which is the best desktop client I have used sooo far. The layout is simple and slick, the popup menu and the alarm sound that goes with it is simply priceless ! And since they added the tweet schedule feature, I can’t help but feel sorry for Hootsuite.

Firefox Prism – it’s soo cool you probably don’t have it (yet)

prism

I don’t know anyone who uses it, and it’s such a shame. Prism is a web application that separates your chosen webpage from the browser and puts it as a link on your desktop. Sounds confusing ? It’s not. Convert Googlemail via Prism into a link on your desktop. Now you just click on the link and directly enter your googlemail account. Use it, it’s sooo awesome.

Focus booster – productivity on steroids

focus

Focus booster is another Adobe AIR application (Jeez, I’m addicted to those!). It’s a desktop client timer that limits your workload to 25 min segments, according to the Pomorodo Technique. This is how it works: You have a goal, let’s say write a blog post, and hit the timer. Now you have a 25 min time limit that puts you on severe pressure (yippieh !). When the bell rings, you got a 5 min break, before you start from new. If you want to be more productive, and you need an invisible kick in the ass, this is the magic you want to use !

VUE – Where art meets planning

VUE

I luv drawing mindmaps: They are beautiful, they kick-ass for planning stuff, but they also take a crazy amount of time to create. That’s why there’s mindmapping software. VUE is by far the best, and I have tried maaaaany. It automates the whole process: Connecting bubbles in huge clusters has never been so easy. If you need a cool tool to plan the fast and fun way, use it.

Warning: You may fall in love with it.

It’s hard what VUE is, you have to experience it for yourself ;)

Webkut – the stylish way to capture webpages

webkut

I know I could just hit the print button. But I haven’t found it on my laptop yet, and I luv doing computer work the creative way. Webkut is (yet) another desktop client that let’s you take the best (and most customizable) screenshots. Very stylish, but you won’t need it.

Teux Deux – easy and fun day planning for your digital soul

TeuxDeux

Teux Deux is a stylish and simple planer app. It’s like your old school To Do – list, only digital. It’s much easier to use than Google calendar, and it’s waaay more fun too. Planning your days has never been such a joyride. The only downside: Forget about long term planning, that’s a pain in the butt with this program.

And finally, my ultimate choice. The program that makes me want to kiss angels on the 7th cloud of heaven:

Windows Live Writer – Every Blogger needs this !!!

live writer

This magic bringer is one of the most innovative free programs I have encountered so far. The crazy thing: It comes from Microsoft !

Microsoft + Innovation ?

Sounds like an oxymoron. But it’s true with this one: Windows Live Writer is the most ass-kicking offline blog writing program in the history of blogging.

Why ?

It establishes a connection to your blog, puts the layout of your website offline and enables you to write and style your post with a 100% WhatYouSeeIsWhatYouGet – attitude. See the photo above: It’s an excerpt of my blog OFFLINE and I’m directly writing ON it !

So if you hate writing posts with WordPress or Word, and you hate HTML styling even more, GET THIS PROGRAM. It will literally change the way you blog

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Your turn.

Do you use any of these mindblowing tools, or better, do you have some that you want MUST share with me and the world ? Tell me in the comments !

Plz RETWEET and Facebook-share this post ! Thanx !

Want to turn visitors into raving customers ?

Fuck yeah !

This is my favorite ecourse for people that HATE sleazy online marketing but want to make money from their site. It's genuine, entertaining and packed with valuable info that helps you make your website profitable like hell.

BTW - I use it myself successfully. It rocks. That's why I'm an affiliate for it ;) Get more visitors to buy your stuff image

Never heard of Live Writer. Very cool! Thanks for the suggestion!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Live writer is the alpha and the omega. Once you use, you will be AMAZED. I promise you that !!!

  • JillianMcCoy

Wow, I hadn't heard of any of these. I'm definitely going to have to check out the mind map and Teux Deux for sure. Thanks Mars!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Jillian, go for it.
I use mind map for planning my digital empire, but Teux Deux is ass-kicking for daily planning. It's sooo easy…

How funny, I switched from Tweetdeck to Hootsuite and much prefer using the online application. It might be that my desktop (my primary computer) is pretty much on its last legs so anything that eats up resources has a big effect on performance.

Will have to give the others a try. How does WebKut compare to Snagit? I'm afraid I'm a bit of a Snagit addict.

I don't know why my stubburn butt hasn't tried Vue yet. It sounds perfect for me – have loved mindmapping ever since I started in 7th grade.

    Thanks for the great list!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Tracy,

yeah, Desktop clients eat it all up, I can understand why you prefer a browser application. VUE is awesome for creative planning, I use it permanently nowadays.
Haven't heard of Snagit before, but I will check it out. Sounds funny, maybe it is better than Webkut.

      go rock !

    Hey Mars,
Great List. I haven't heard any of them, except Tweetdeck. I really like the last one “Windows Live Writer” Really Ass- Kicking.

    Hey Mars,

I have not heard of ANY of those GREAT tools that you have mentioned, specially TweetDeck.

I am off to downloading TweetDeck. Thank you for telling me that Twitter is nothing without it. Those words were the inspiration for me to download Tweetdeck.

    Thanks for the awesome list.

    -Nabeel

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      No worries, Nabeel

I wouldn't use Twitter if it wasn't for Tweetdeck. It's the alpha and the omega of monitoring your tweets. It also tells you when you get mentioned, (a cool alarm sound). If you got questions, just ask me.

  • http://cashwithatrueconscience.com/rbblog Ryan

Thanks for sharing these free tools Mars!

I will be downloading the Windows Live Writer. I write most of my posts offline so this is a perfect tool for me. Word just don't cut it.

    Thanks again!

    Ryan

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Ryan,

I'm insane enough to believe that Live Writer will change the way you blog. The customization possibilities without needing anything to know about HTML are awe-some. And the way you can integrate pictures, well, it's just priceless !!

  • http://www.sexycopy.org k0zm0zs0ul

Just want to say this is an excellent list, w/ a few tools I hadn't tried before, but now I will! :) So thanks for the heads up babe.

    Warmest
    C

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      thanx Cori,

I hope you use some of them. They are really ass-kicking ;)

  • http://bloggingfor.info Thu Nguyen

Sweet collection you got here Mars, will be compiling my own soon however, I think yours is a pretty good feat here by a long stretch. Will look into them immediately. Thanks!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Thu,

go for it. Windows Live Writer and Tweetdeck are along my favorites. Can't wait to see what you have to offer !

      • http://bloggingfor.info Thu Nguyen

I agree, ever since yesterday, I didn't know what adobe air installs are but I have to say, those are some great concepts which prism and webkut have put together. Now I can't get enough of TweetDeck! It makes Twitter so addictive.

  • http://www.shawnchristenson.com Shawn Christenson

Mars – what a refreshing list. It's not the 'oh i've seen all these before' list that i say 'oh i've seen this list before'.

I just switched to Tweetdeck 2 days ago. I was using Tweetie for Mac and it was hard to switch (because tweetie is gorgeous and easy to read) – but Tweetdeck is just powerful.

I'm checking out Focus Booster!! Booyah!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

thanx Shawn, I was pretty sure that no one actually uses most this tools. I happen to be a diligent internet web tool Indiana Jones – discoverer, and I want to find strange stuff that's actually useful ;)
Tweetdeck is Awe-some, and focus booster, well, it will boooost your focus ;)

  • Donenck

    Mars,
Your site has really come along nicely. These are some awesome tools. The only one I'm familiar with and use is Tweetdeck. Thanks for the tips. I'll be sure to check them out.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      thanx Don,

yep, it has been hard but rewarding work. Definitely check those tools out ;)

  • http://www.getinthehotspot.com/ Get In The Hot Spot

I have to be more techie. But another tool I love (not free but cheap) pen and paper. Will be reformed I'm sure. Your english is so amazing. Hard to believe it's not your first language. Now, do you have a fave for the world cup?!:)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey, thanks Annabel,

I'm doing my best. Believe it or not, I have just read Leo's Zen To Done – productivity book, and I follow his advice to ALWAYS carry a notebook. I want to fully unleash my creativity. My fave ? Germany of course ;)

  • http://www.bruceteague.com Bruce Teague

I've been looking for a good mind mapping software, but all of them take more time than if I grabbed a pen and paper. I'll have to check out VUE. TuexDeux and Focus Booster look promising too. Thanks for the list.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Bruce,
VUE is by far the fastest out there – and I have tried many many programs.TeuxDeux is awesome, because it's so darn simple. Use them, they will change the way you work. Rock !

  • Anthony Krese

I've been using a little application called Timer Utility (for mac). I'm sure there is a Windows equivalent. I give myself various tasks and set the clock to countdown. It helps me get things done…realize how much time I'm losing!

Wasn't my idea…stole it from David Risley! Thought I'd pass it on.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      That's awesome, Anthony,

I wish there was something equivalent for Windows. I keep looking, thanx for the mention !!

      • http://www.anthonykrese.com Anthony Krese

Oh, I see you like Japan. Can you speak/understand Japanese?

Ansoni desu. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu. Watashi no tsuma wa nihonjin. Demo Nihongo o yoku hanasemasen!!!

I taught english in Japan for two years, so I didn’t get a chance to practice Japanese much…and I speak English with my wife. Though I pick some up from her talking to my son.

        • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Sugoi, Ansoni-san. Ore no nihongo wa mata heta desu. Nihon wa daisuki da yo ;)

Like I said, my Japanese doesn't exist anymore. That's cool that your wife's Japanese, I luv cross-cultural relationships, it expands your horizon. I used to work as a barkeeper in Tokyo, heck, that was a coool time.

  • http://www.icebluebanana.com mark

Nice list Mars. I am also a big fan of Adobe AIR apps, though they may all go away once (proposed) HTML5 is implemented across the major browsers. That is going to be great!

Anyway, I use prism and love it. I am going to go now so I can check out TweetDeck (been using coTweet) and the MS app.

Do you know if the MS app works with or against other browsers? Most WP templates already handle most cross-browser stuff ok, but I am a little concerned with using only IE to see what stuff looks like.

    Have a great day!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Mark,

I use the MS app with Firefox, because I don't like IE. And it works perfectly, so don't worry about it. I highly recommend taking it, because it's soooooooo helpful !!

  • Tammy

I lurve lists like this; they're like virtual sweetie shops!

Tweetdeck, tick! The rest are new to me, so will definitely have a look.

Mindmapping and to-do apps are the holy grails; I still haven't found ones that sit quite right. I trialed 'Things' but found it a bit pricey to get a licence when the trial expired.

For mindmapping, my current favorite is Freemind, although it could do with being a bit prettier; I'm a creative dammit!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Heya Tammy,

Freemind sounds interesting, although I doubt it will smash VUE. Have you ever tried TeuxDeux ? It's very simplistic, but it helps you get the stuff done for this week ;) BTW: I saw Simon's tweet about you. I luv this guy, his blog and speeches are so inspiring.

    • http://www.theartofmanhood.com Jeff Navarro

Tammy, have you tried XMind? There's a free and a pro version…and it's definitely prettier than Freemind…although that's not saying much. I like my mindmaps to have an aesthetic touch, as well…I'm anxious to try VUE, but I've got a feeling it's somewhere between XMind and Freemind in the looks department.

  • srinirao

    Mars,

For mac users MacJournal or Writeroom serves the same purpose as windows live writer. I love the fact that you use time constraints as well. That to me is one of the most effective ways to get as much work as possible done in the shortest amount of time. I'm going to have to check out some of these tools as they sound awesome :)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

if you like planning in a creative way, you should definitely check out VUE. It's one ass-kicking and easy to use mindmap software, Srini !

Fluid App is just like Prizm I think except using the Safari OS. It's pretty sweet. I use it for stuff like hootsuite & pandora. Makes a desktop app like *that* and is so much less resource intensive than the adobe air apps.

awesome – those are two apps that I use on a daily (hourly?) basis !

      Have fun !

  • bizwiz

Awesome post! Will definitely be following this more :)

  • http://www.theartofmanhood.com Jeff Navarro

Nice list! I'm going to try out Prism…and I'm about to download VUE. I'm a huge fan of mind-mapping. I've been using the free version of XMind, which is pretty cool for a free app, though I'll be looking forward to test-driving VUE.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Jeff !,
I luv mind maps too – the coolest thing ever !

I tried XMInd, but VUE is the bomb for me – both in terms of style and usability.

      • http://www.theartofmanhood.com Jeff Navarro

Alright….I gotta hand it to you. I tried out VUE yesterday, and I'm hooked!
