Internet Marketer VS. Digital Crusader – Who Wins ?

Internet Marketers VS Digital Crusaders

The web has become the ultimate market place – everyone wants to sell something.

Some people (let’s call them internet marketers) want to earn huge amounts of money as fast as possible, while others inspire people to challenge the status quo and lead an independent life (let’s call them digital crusaders).

The elite of both factions earn a full-time living from their digital presence, but they do it in entirely different ways.

A digital crusader has the potential of becoming a world famous A-list blogger with a raving fan base.

By the end of this article, you will know

A) What separates a crusader from a marketer

B) How YOU can become a crusader

Before we jump straight into the battle, let me introduce my favorite digital crusaders. They both make a full-time income from their blogs.

  • Chris Guillebeau

Chris-Alexa

chris-header

Chris is one of my all-time favorites – his blog design is the most mind-blowing I have EVER seen and his message is an inspiring mix between traveling, living and working – the non-conformist style.

He’s got a RAVING fan base, receives about 35 – 80 comments per post (!) and inspires people around the globe.

From a personal branding perspective, he’s doing EVERYTHING right.

  • Everett Bogue

Everett-Alexa

farbeyond

Everett is quite a new player – his blog is only 7 months, but captured already over 3000 (!) subscribers.

He writes about minimalistic living and making meaningful connections.

From a marketing perspective, he’s a cool brand.

His unique style is consistent throughout his web presence: The writing is concise, and the blog design is kept very simple – minimalism deluxe ;)

Now let us begin:

What separates a marketer from a crusader ?

versus

1. Don’t call yourself an internet marketer

Chris and Everett call themselves status quo challengers, revolutionaries and minimalists. They obviously don’t lack self-confidence, but they also know what’s captivating. Strong and inspiring titles thrill people, and magically attract those who share the same belief.

Lesson: Give yourself a title that represents what you stand for or believe in. A marketer is what you do, a minimalist is what you believe.

2. Be on a mission

Internet Marketers worry about making money online, and ONLY about making money online. Their about page usually goes like this:

I make a full-time income from my online business – a whopping 100,000 (!) per month. Subscribe to my newsletter and get a FREE tutorial   (worth 97$) !

Digital Crusaders don’t follow the money – their life’s about challenging the status quo and leading a life of freedom – they are on a MISSION !

  • Chris – how to change the world by achieving significant, personal goals while helping others at the same time.
  • Everett – about living a simple minimalist lifestyle and freeing yourself from the cycle of consumerism.

Lesson: Internet marketers define themselves by what they DO, digital crusaders define themselves by what they BELIEVE and WHY they do it.

3. Give your products and services inspiring names

Internet Marketers name their products after their functions – producing ebooks with titles like “How to make 1000 dollars online”, “How to generate 500 leads per day” or “How to create insane amounts of traffic – on complete autopilot !”

Those headlines feel very “scammy” by now and only address the logical part of your brain – the weak part.

Digital Crusaders on the other hand never call their ebooks “ebooks”:

  • Chris – The Empire Building Kit
  • Everett – The Art of Being Minimalist

The difference is gigantic. Words like “Empire building” and “Being Minimalist” sound not only inspiring and motivating, but also address the emotional part of your brain – the dominant part.

Lesson: Don’t name your product after its function, but what it stands for. Making money online is a function, working anywhere you want, whenever you want is a lifestyle.

4.Write about the whole, and make it personal

Marketers work efficiently and logically: Their copy is based on effective writing that wants to make you buy. It’s very specific and can be very clever, but it lacks personal flavor most of the time.

Crusaders rather write about the whole – they let their personal stories and adventures flow into their posts. You will barely get specifics (how to do this) or technical stuff (how to install…)from them – it’s an overall experience they want to share with you, and it can create a deep bond between you and them.

Lesson: Don’t (only) write technical instructions – blend in your views of life and share your personal stories – it can establish a deep emotional connection.

I-THINk conclusion:

If we are brutally honest, both types do basically the same:

They teach you how to make money online

The way they do it is totally different – marketers address your logic while crusaders connect with your emotions.

It’s all about perception – the illusion that’s manifested in our consciousness.

japaneseicon Internet Marketers can make insane amounts of money, but they’ll never have raving fans or leave a legacy. Digital Crusaders on the other hand inspire thousands around the world and make a nice living, but will probably never be rich.

Far out Mars! You just keep coming up with the goods. This is a great analogy (technically its not but hey) and really good points here that I have summarised and will keep note of when I move forward in my business venture (still not sure which I am)
Now to fire up the motivational juices and give my inner internet marketer a 'Arr-U-ken” (or is that a sonic BOOOM?)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Alex,

awesome, and remember – deep down we are all internet marketers – it's just how we live in breath that perception ;)
I would consider myself a bit of both – the best from two worlds !

  • http://www.jewelry-secrets.com/ Richard Scott

They both win. The bottom line, no matter who you are, is going to be running a business and making money. Everyone is going to take a different path. It doesn't mean one way is better than the other, it's just the route you take. Some people don't care if they are the most popular or titled “A-lister”, they want to make a living online and they do so the best they can.

I may never be as outgoing as some of these people. I'm an introvert and don't have a problem with it. I would say my approach is probably half and half. I learn from everyone and want to make money and friends as well.

    Tied game! :)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Richard,

I'm totally biased, that's why I'm more in favor of the digital crusader. The really rich guys are the marketers – and they don't care all the stuff and just want to get their money. That's perfectly fine. I'm never objective, and I luv spreading a positive message.
Whatever works right for you is the best way, as simple as that.

  • http://www.affiliateprogress.com Des @ Affiliate Progress

    Hi Mars,
how about doing both? Today I do the AM stuff, but coming soon in my forthcoming downsizing blog I take on the crusader mantle and persuade the world to join me in getting some dirt under their finger nails :-)

Seriously, great post, and as thought provoking as ever!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Des,

choose whatever fits you. I've picked those two extremes because it's easier to display the differences. Anything that works for you needs to be done your way – no matter what someone else says.

  • http://www.financiallydigital.com Nunzio Bruno

I think you really hit some great points there. The biggest thing I pulled out of this, besides giving stuff awesome names, was your definition of a crusader and the focus on “believing” and “why”. I can't wait to have that raving fan base because it'll mean that I am touching lives and spreading some real awareness..and that people are coming back for more of it!! :)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Nunzio,

the overall message and the believing part is probably the biggest difference – what you stand for is much stronger (and emotionally appealing) then what you do. Start as soon as you can with spreading your influence and getting yourself some hardcore fans ;)

  • http://www.brandonburgh.com BrandonBurgh

First, I love the new killer content posts…really do.
And secondly, every time I pop over here, I gain something new. So, that is a good thing.

I think you are right in that the crusader will when, as they are following their passion and dreams, versus just the marketer trying to make a quick buck.

    Brandon

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Brandon,

I hope they are killer – I'm now creating less posts but longer and more valuable ones. And about the internet marketing -we are all doing it – it's just how we create that perception. And it's a personal goal of mine to inspire and enrich the world along the digital ride !

  • srinirao

    Mars,

I've been really impressed with all the stuff you've been doing and I keep seeing you pop up everywhere. We'll have to chat soon. I think this is a really great analogy. My favorite thing about the digital crusaders is the personal touch that they add to everything.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Srini,

Yeah – I want to be like Superman – appear everywhere – out of nowhere ;)

Now seriously, you are right – people like Chris and Everett really flavor their writing style with personal stories and opinions – and humans simply CRAVE that.

  • http://PhantasmagoricRadio.wordpress.com Tim

Using 100% of my marketing skills gives me a shallow feeling. But as long as the sincere content is there, then you should be fine.

Emphasis: YOU should be fine, not me. I'm working on a plain of my own with it's own rules and special conditions.

You are too, I know. I get that. Number 4 rings a bell with me. Thanks.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Tim,

making up your own rules is always the best way to go.
There's a mix between those 2 extremes, I know it. And genuine marketing based your experience is never shallow !

  • http://www.makemoneyontheinternet.com Chris Guthrie

I think you're lumping all internet marketers into a box by offering only two possible scenarios. What about the internet marketers that create and run good websites for a living that aren't even related to making money online? (i.e. myself)

I would consider myself a cross between the two categories because yes I do have a blog that discusses how to make money online, but I don't write articles every day about “insert new product or service that is the only way to make money” In fact, I do not use any advertising except for an occasional affiliate link. 95% of my money is earned by other great websites I've built to fill a need (that are completely unrelated to the “make money online” niche you seem to be attacking in this post)

Can I be called an Internet Crusader perhaps?

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Chris,

thanks for your honest opinion. I picked the most extreme examples of either side – the scammy marketer and the inspirational crusader – obviously for display reasons. I know the world is not black and white, and they are tons of marketers who are genuine (Yaro Starak, Pat Flynn).
Everyone's a marketer, it's just about how you present yourself and what message you want to spread.
Personally I prefer the inspiring one, and that's why I share my personal opinion here.

  • justfeelgreat

Straight to the point! I can't agree more. I would add that most Digital Crusader know how create a relationship with people. They connect through sharing freely with others; they connect by being authentic and they look real to others. Most Internet marketers and especially beginners/intermediates rely on systems, strategies and rarely walk the talk.. Is it so hard to connect with others. I thing it's harder to try to sound like a sales machine!

    Keep up Mars!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Stephane,

You are absolutely right – scammy marketers rely on system and on quantity – there's no personal connection whatsoever. I believe we have enough of those – it's time for digital crusaders who inspire and enrich the online world.

  • http://andbreak.com/ Julius Kuhn-Regnier

Great article here Mars. I really like the way you took a look at their approach and how they have set their goals.
    Keep it up man!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Thanks Julius,

there two favorite mavericks of mine – and a perfect example for being a digital crusader.

  • ralphcarlson

This is another mindblower, Mars. I can always depend on you to shake me up. My problem is staying that way.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Staying is not a good action Ralph, challenging yourself keeps the mind fresh and the life exciting !

  • http://www.venturemixx.com/ Tony Ruiz

Ah, I like the name digital crusader! Great way to pin-point the difference of the two!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Thanx Tony

  • http://lynnfang.com Lynn

Great points! Thanks for your insights. Reading bloggers like you keep me going :] I would say digital crusaders want to spread ideas, create change, highlight problems with society. And because they do that effectively, they can make money. Everyone wants to make money, but you better have something very worthwhile to offer [to me anyway]. =P

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Heya Lynn,

That's why I admire them – they have something worthwhile to offer – be it through inspiration or spreading a positive message. Bloggers can have soo much positive influence, why would you want to waste your life with scammy internet marketing techniques when you could make an inspiring impact (while earning money from it!) ?

  • http://bitesizeidea.com/ Damien Olenslager

Wow, I had never considered this distinction, but you make it so clear. Crusaders have hearts and internet marketers are all about the Benjamins.

This is my solemn pledge to have a heart.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      I do differentiate, Damien,

and I hope you are a digital crusader like me ;)
