Why YOU really Need a Logo !

Mars Dorian and his beloved logo MD.

Hello my Revoluzzer !

This post is a request from Damien who’s rocking http://www.bitesizeidea.com/

He wants to know a kick-ass way to make a logo, and I bet you all want to, right ?

I luv, luv and double-luv my own logo. It’s simple, it’s black and red and if it’s the last thing I would see on earth, I would die a happy man ! I have designed it myself, and even though it looks super-simple, it took me almost 6 hours to create it (whoooosh!). But then again, only results matter, right ?

There are still people in the world that think a logo is useless, and I can only “prey” for them ;)

Slick logos not only blow you visually away, no, they also come with great, and I mean, grrreat benefits ! Some major ones are:

  • easiest way to promote your brand. You know, even if you’re a top player (and I know you are), always quoting your about page and your works is tiresome. Make it easy for your clients and fans and give them your logo – let the spread feast begin !
  • Clarifies your one-of-a-kindness. Having your own logo is the easiest visual difference from your competitors. It dramatically boosts your uniqueness and makes you stand out from the crowd !
  • It looks frickin’ awesome. Yeah, this one doesn’t sound like a scientific fact, but it is.There’s simply no keyword on the planet that could contain the sheer awesomeness of a logo. It’s the essence of your brilliant brand compressed into the form of a symbol. Heck, even comic book heroes have ‘em, – Superman, Batman, Hello ?

I know those facts convince you, and that’s why I’ll share some simple and powerful ways to create a smashing dashing logo. Burn your brand into human consciousness !

  • Make it dirt simple. Even if I shrink your logo down to 25 px avatar size, it must still look awesome. The simpler, the better.
  • Think about what it should represent. What’s your brand are about ? Technology – then make it look techy. Humor ? Give it a funny touch. Optimistic ? Give it light and bright colors. You get the idea.
  • Use your initials, a symbol, or your avatar. Whatever fits you brand.
  • Use only 2 colors, 3 MAX ! My logo is just black and red. KISS it !                                              (Keep It Simple and Stupid!)
  • Use specific colors. Not all colors were created equal. Some combos are more powerful than others. Complementary colors are cool: Green + Red, Violet + Yellow, Orange + BlueContrast is always strong: Black + Yellow, Black + White, Black + Red, Black + Orange
  • If you don’t have any Photoshop skills whatsoever, go check out www.99designs.comThey serve your needs.

Still clueless ? I hope not. Open your brain and inhale the following WORLD FAMOUS logos. Get inspired.

Tell me what you like about YOUR logo, and if you don’t have one, tell me when You’ll get one !

I definitely want a logo but am still cooking up ideas in my brain. All I know so far is I want it to be fun, crisp, and spunky. Sounds sort of like a beverage commercial ;)I'm glad you pointed out keeping it simple for avatar purposes, as I hadn't thought of that.

      Hey Jean,
Fun, crisp and spunky – those are cool traits if you want to create that upbeat, positive feeling. It's definitely something you should have right from the start.
Can't wait to see yours !

  • Joe

Awesome tips, Mars! Been thinking about how my logo should look. Will take your advice to mind and implement it. Thanks, man.

      Hey Joe, go for it.
You'll rock it, I know that. Can't wait to see yours ;)

I have been photoshopping a few times, probably a total of 3 hours trying to come up with a logo. None caught my eye so far. Glad to hear it took you 6 hours, makes me feel a little better :)

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Yep, coming up with ideas is the hard part here.
      Don't worry, you'll get there, I know it ;)

Your logo is legit Mars. What I like most is that its in every damn picture (seriously). I need a simple logo. I brand the hell out the site with my super banner, but a little gravy for the mashed potatoes is definitely something I am looking for if you know what I mean. Awesome tips dude.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Thanks Alex,
yeah, I'm totally obsessed with mine. I don't put it on every pic, but almost ;) What you need is maybe a smaller version, square styled. Maybe you can use the initials or use a symbol, just something smaller !

Mars, I loved your logo the minute I stepped onto your site! Mine sucks. It used to be a stock logo from one of those free websites. I know that's cheating, but I was lazy.

Thanks for the tips, you've convinced me to take the time to create a superior logo!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Hey Damien, Yeah, you want to be original ! After all, it's going to represent your brand for a long long time. It's really worth putting some time into !

I just finished creating my logo, and I'm pretty happy with it. Of course it doesn't fit well with my wordpress theme so now I'm working on that…

Thanks for your motivation on getting that done. I'll let you know when I take it live on the site, so you can check it out.

      Awesome TJ, I'm curious !

  • http://daringclarity.com/ Lana {Daring Clarity}

I've been thinking long and hard when redesigning my blog about the logo. Then I just went with my picture in the header. What could be more unique? I know, I need a logo too:) Clarity is so freaking clear that I can't give it a shape or form. Maybe it will come to me in a dream today:) Thanks for the tips Mars!

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Lana,
Just do what feels natural for you. But don't hope for dream, I've been waiting centuries for having solutions appear in my dreams, never happened ;(

I think it's important to have your own logo for your blog. It's really a good way to stand out from other blogs. I indeed like your logo Mars. Btw. have you installed Google Analytics?! :P

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Thanks Julius,

Yeah, I installed a google analytics plugin, but it's eating too much memory:
Fatal error: allowed memory size of xxxxx exhausted!
I get that a lot with plugins, and that's why I currently only stick to 8 ! (and WordPress statistics!)

Awesome logos but some of them are following a trend (like web 2.0) which is current and might not sustain for a longer period. A logo must retain the same visual attention and message even when it is converted to pure black & white. I hope most of the designers agree here.

When I began blogging in 2007 I didn't have much of a logo (or brand) to speak of – but then last fall when I redesigned my website I created this little “running dude” as part of my “office escape” theme. I am playing with the idea of perfect this logo to make it simpler – right now it might be a bit too colorful and complex… but ironically ever since I started using the logo everywhere I've been recognized more, and my site has become more popular.

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

      Hey Mike,
yep, those are the beautiful side effects of a logo – it's easy to recognize and it can spread your brand idea like a virus.
Even before I read your comment, I remembered your website because of your logo !

  • dragonblogger

You can bet a lot of work went into my own logo for my site, my logo came before I even got the official name of the site. I actually turned my tattoo into my logo for DragonBlogger.com

    • http://www.marsdorian.com/ Mars Dorian

Yep, your logo is very unique – the moment one visits your site is already the moment you own in terms of uniqueness. It's such a great branding spell in general !
