How to Maximize the Impact of your Brand

Mars Dorian with brand logo.

Yeah ! It’s Brand Thursday my friends, and that means “brand talk” until the end of time (or the end of this post)

! Hey, at least I warned you.

I’m Mars Dorian,

and I’m totally obsessed with branding – I read, smell and digest everything that’s even remotely related to the B-Word. If I could teleport myself into the 4th dimension and fuse with it, hell, I would !

Every day is spent on improving my brand experience. And as you can see, I’m deeply in love with my logo. That’s why I throw it on every digital slate possible. I want to infest every inch of digital awareness with my brand, and I think

YOU SHOULD DO THE SAME

And I also think that most people on the net don’t do it the efficient way. They have a blog, some decent banner and a profile pic slammed on the “about me” page. With that comes your run-of-the-mill Twitter and Facebook page.

The big disaster here is that it all feels scarily unrelated: The Facebook page is generic, the Twitter background is non-existent and the overall brand consistency is blown to ashes.

Yeah, it’s okey-schmokey decent, but then again, decency is for losers. If you come to my site, you’re in for some delusional epicness !

THE OVERALL PACKAGE

The best brands in the web galaxy are those that are a 150% consistent: Every part of their online presence can easily be associated with their brand. Their Facebook page, their Twitter-and their web page – it’s all connected – visually and content-wise.

DO THE SAME WITH YOU BRAND !

Consider every online platform you’re engaged with as an extension of your brand.

Every tiny bit of your space MUST be branded.

Yep, that’s total brand consistency, which can (hopefully!) lead to total brand domi-NATION ! (wooh!)

Let’s jump right into the action – here are some ways of making your digital empire consistent throughout the web:

  • Same Avatar. Yeah, and I don’t mean James Cameron’s recent space ballade. I mean that tiny pic of you/ or your brand that joins every blog comment you will ever make. Question: Do you have a consistent and unique Avatar that’s present on every page, and that can easily be related to your brand ? If not, then frickin’ DO IT NOW ! It’s essential.
  • Background page design. Does your Youtube/Twitter/MySpace etc. account show YOUR brand design ? Is it visually and content-wise connected with your brand ? (Right now, I’m working on my YouTube account- it’s getting there !)
  • Get a logo. There are seriously some people in the web that believe having a logo isn’t that important. WRONG ! A logo is the coolest/cheapest/easiest way of infecting the world with your brand awareness. You need a logo like you need the air to breath. If you have one, slam it on every digital space you can get your hands on. If you need some inspiration with the logo creation, read my post why you need a logo .
  • Content Consistency. Is every content you churn out a direct link to your brand experience ? Do you pour you own style, (brand) name and other trademarks in your messages ? Well, you should.

Listen, this may seem a like a bit of work, but we’re talking BRAND DESTINY here. The overall goal is to illuminate the world with your brand existence, and the best way to do that is by connecting every space of your online appearance with your brand.

This message can’t be stressed enough, and that’s why I want to burn it once again into the depths of your consciousness.

MAKE YOUR BRAND CONSISTENT ! Every online platform YOU grace with your presence should be easily associated with your brand. Make every itzy-bitzy info you ever create a part of your overall brand experience. Your Blog serves as your main base – and everything else will be your stationary outpost. Let your brand crusade take over the world !

Tell me what YOU do to maximize your brand’s power and please retweet/Facebook-share this post !

  • Wait, you're telling people to go all out and become 1000% transparent. I can see how that can be scary but if we really care about our audience than being all and open is necessary. I'm getting it.

Downloading a Twitter Photoshop template now and re-doing my logo in Photoshop.

    Thanks for the tips...yet again!

This is a great post for anyone wanting to establish an online identity, you must be a personality and a brand to stand out as a blogger. I worked hard to create one brand that stands for all my blogs, only problem is I have conflicting markets/niche for all my blogs which makes my following all over the place.
  • Hey Justin,

this is a freaking old post, but I'm glad you still found it ;).
Mmmm, I understand what you mean with your blogs - one idea would be that you represent an idea, which is discernible throughout your online presence (tagline, your mission, your reasons etc.), and that you use your dragon logo (similar design) on EVERY blog you have out there. Not as your main banner, but maybe with a smaller version in the footer. You know, showing your trademark, like Virgin and its diverse companies.

Yeah, that is what I like to do. I found this post by browsing your SiteMap, I often browse the SiteMap of blogs that I like to see what they have posted previously that catches my eye. I do this especially for blogs that I only recently found or haven't visited it that often, I like getting a scope for general topic themes by looking at a sitemap.
  • This is for the first time ever and both men seem curious about the others possible weak spot.Icon starts well with a Bulldog but Wolf charges him into the turnbuckle and lands a Buzzaw Kick, and Icon ahs to retreat outside. The crowd boo and Icon looks upset so he runs back to the ring and unloads on Wolf.
  • I like it because it provides a quick overview of where a website “fits” in popularity – PR, Alexa, and Compete. Average the three out and you can ball park it. Plus, it sits in a typically unused section of the browser, so it doesn’t move anything important or crowd the fold.

    Mars,
Damn, You do live this. I thought I was beginning to understand personal brand building but it is clear that I don't know shit. Have to check out more of what you are up to.
  • Thanks Ralph,

Hey, no sweat here. One can never learn enough - I'm still at the beginning myself.
  • You really know what's up Dorian. I what you say about consistency and I think that's something I really need to start working on from this moment on.
  • Thanks Wilson,

    Way to go!
  • this is a great post! I'd add to content consistency - know your core message and communicate it directly or indirectly in everything you do or say online.
  • Thanks,
And yep, core consistency message is absolutely vital, I'll include that in the next post :)
  • Hey, thanks !

Yep, I have been working hard on my blog. I want to make sure it's becoming a larger-than-life brand. I'm going to check out your site and see how your brand is doing :)
  • You are really a great product of branding and that can be seen directly from your header. Branding is really good and once you could build a strong brand, people don't want to know every other thing, they will just be following you.
    Thanks
  • This is very good and totally on target... branding is one of the most important things in the world for an individual who plans to live outside of the norm (i.e. the basic 9 to 5 hours for pay model) because your personal "brand" will carry through regardless what you do in your life...
  • Absolutely, and in my opinion, you want to brand every inch of digital space with you "Company". I'm working on that !
