The day BoingBoing’s Xeni Jardin published an article about “Die Antwoord ” was the day that changed it all:

A strange, trash hip-hopish band from South Africa that has been pulled out from the depths of obscurity straight into the limelight of the web.

The impact was overwhelming, and internet fame hit faster than the speed of light.

The jackpot is ringing on all fronts:

The band has been invited to Hollywood, signed a record deal with Interscope and will get a premium music video directed by Neill Blomkamp , helmer of the recent smash hit District 9.

All of this is creamed with thousands of new fans AROUND the globe that are busy building fan clubs and joining “Die Antwoord”s Facebook fan page.

Booom, just like that.

And that’s really the beauty of the web – one day you’re obscure and underground – and on the next you’re in internet heaven.

But let’s make no mistake here: members of Band have been making music for almost a decade – the world just didn’t know about it.

And even though they’re working in the music biz, the rules they used to build their internet presence are the same we can use to brand ourselves.

That’s why I proudly present you the unofficial lessons from “Die Antwoord”s online marketing style. Get inspired and use their ideas to build your own unique web presence.

  • Do something outrageous. Making music isn’t new. Presenting it your way and adding a remarkable edge to it can be. Find your own style and present your service, product and/or blog in a way that no one else does.
  • Stay true to your origins. The members of “Die Antwoord” are South African, and they show it. You see it in their videos, you hear in their interviews and lyrics. Afrikaans. White suburbs. Broke, crazy and raw. There’s no room for pretending and denying. You get what you see. Authenticity + Creativity = major impact.
  • Be remarkable. You may not like them, but you haven’t seen anything like them either. Right this very moment, I couldn’t even name one band that’s even slightly similar to them, and that’s brilliant marketing at its best. No comparison = no competition.
  • Create a great overall package. Unique personalities, offbeat music and lyrics, an interactive website to die for and stylish low budget videos that make you smile – “Die Antwoord” is a brand that’s ruling every part of the web media.
  • Tell your story. Broke but passionate musicians living in the suburbs, breathing their music and earning lots of derision – It’s a true, authentic story that people can emotionally relate to. What’s your story ?

The day I read about them was also the day I changed. I’m so in love with their style; it has inspired me a lot. I’m going to implement some of their “strategies” and assimilate them into my own style of branding, because it deserves to be used. Hopefully, it will inspire you to fine tune your brand as well. The world needs more colorful and creative brands !

Tell me your opinion. What DO YOU think of them and their style of branding,

and please retweet and Facebook-share this post.

  • Listening to "Beat Boy" right now. They seem totally weird but I like the music. I'd like to see them perform live. Reminds me of modern day Devo with a twist of Bjork.
  • argh ok good job with the site and all, good article, but please, dear god, think twice before you make a ridiculous statement like: "Die Antwoord are South African and they show it." "Authenticity"?!!!? Really??

    read: http://melomaniasa.blogspot.com/2010/03/culture-clash-minus-talent-of-clash.html

other than that, good times all round :)
  • Hey Natasha,

I get your point. I've just read the article, you've linked to me. I totally understand that you don't want to be pigeonholed, but
Truth is, I have never been to South Africa, but I have good friends from there and they told how much they loved "Die Antwoord". That was one of the reasons why I stumbled across them. From that perspective I thought they'd by widely accepted, and of course, a single band can not represent a whole country, just like one black hip hopper doesn't represent the whole black community in the States. I wrote this sentence because in Europe, many hip hop bands try to emulate the USA - gold chains, black SUVs, super-model women etc. It's fake, because we don't really have that style here. Die Antwoord" is more original : You see them rapping in their little van, you see South African suburbs - they completely own THEIR style, which is what I meant by authentic and being South African.
  • Thank you for replying. I definitely see your point, and because you don't live here I totally understand! Thanks for reading the article, I just feel that it's important that the overseas crowd understand that Die Antwoord was not given permission to represent SA (one of the most diverse places in the world), and therefore it's important that people realise that we aren't all like them, or all have the same South African experience. An informal "study" (mahala.com) showed that 90% of the people living in the area they claim to represent haven't even heard of them! Poverty and lack of access to things like internet is probably to blame for that, and poverty is certainly not what the members of Die Antwoord are experiencing.

    Have a happy day! :)
  • I love their style but the music is not next level. Take out the arikaans accents and there's nothing original about it. It would be fantastic if they'd actually got something amazing and were this casual and jokey about it, but they don't. It's just the same fun stuff loads of people make in their bedrooms, but with more character.
  • I have to admit that I never heard of these guys. But it's amazing how quickly they became famous just from one website. As I was reading this, I was thinking about all those YouTube sensations that quickly became famous from one video.

I have to agree that their video IS completely remarkable and stands out from the "noise." You can definitely learn a lot about branding from these guys.
  • Hey Steve.
Yes, they've become a daily dose. They help me whenever I'm about to tone down my edginess. Our online world is so dull, let's make it more creative.
  • They're absolutely creative. It's not my type of music, but you can definitely see the talent and the passion there.
  • Love it! Especially be original, you are helping keep me true to my roots Mars, i think I need to let my personal brand get a little more crazy and break free from the business as usual idea that most people have and this helps push me towards that!
  • Yeah, I think there's more "offbeatness" in you then you want to show us :)
The online business I want to create is going to be 100% me - with all the edges and flaws. It's tempting to follow the known business way - looking "professional" and official etc. I say to hell with it, if it's not your style, then throw it out -and create something new !
The world is full of carbon copies -
don't adapt to the world, but adapt the world to yourself.
  • Crazy... I've never even heard of them... I just checked out their site... I think I kind of like their music... It's crazy different... I just watched their music video (which is pretty cool) and their live performance makes me want to see them... If they pop down here to Uruguay I'll be there...
  • Yeah, they're totally remarkable. And they established their fame entirely online- that's why I used them for this branding special 1
